Atlanta's Pioneer
Mansion Torn Down
Atlanta's pioneer stately man-
■ion—the Mathews House—passed
into history last week when this
old home was torn down. It was
constructed in the year 1876, and
has weathered the storms of time
for 72 years.
The passing «f this old home
made us feel sad for it was one
of the land-marks in the history
of Atlanta, Texas.
Yes, in the early days of the
history of Atlanta, Texas, this old
home was erected to stand majesti-
cally by the "side of the road
where the races of men would go
by."
It was constructed by a Mr.
Hardy—grandfather of our fellow
townsman Ransom Hardy, Jr., who
is ah employee in the Atlanta Na-
tional Bank here in Atlanta, Texas
It was then known as "The Hardy
House" and became a hotel for the
transient people who came to our
city as visitors and traveling sales-
men known away back in that day
as "Drummers."
In after years, it became the
home of the family of Dr. Y. A.
Mathews a pioneer physician who
was born March 5, 1837—just one
one year after the Battle of San
Jacinto was fought and the Inde-
pendence of Texas was won.
This old home was constructed
on the style of Southern Colonial
homes, having long and spacious
lower and upper front verandas'
supported by four very large'
columns together with its four1 jenny Lind, the Swedish Night-
wick chimney and as many old ingale, electrified the world's peo-
time fire-places, having spacious pie with her voice when she first
lower and upper rooms, with a sang: "Be It Ever So Humble,
stairway leading to them. Yes, it! There's No Place Like Home."
Some of the 75,000 ABC Pins Get Ready to Travel
$
m
Did you know that rules of the American Bowling
Congress call for daily replacement of the bowling pins
on its 40 tournament alleys? This means some 75,000 new
pins ore used in the course of the event. The practice
assures that every team will compete under exactly the
same circumstances. In the photograph above a girl is
repacking a few of the discarded pins for distribution by
Chevrolet truck to privately owned bowling establishments.
was typically a Southern Colonial
home.
This majestic home was the
scene of many gay festivities in
the by-gone days of other years,
and its confines were graced by
three of Atlanta's outstanding and
beautiful young ladies, Misses Inez
Willie and Mora Mathews.
As we here contemplate upon
the passing of this old-time home,
we think of other homes and of
other people.
One of America's great peoms
is: "The House By The Side of The
Road".
The famous homes: Mount Ver-
non on the Potomac, and the Hermi
tage near Nashville, Tenn., and the
noted Southern Colonial Homes
near Natchez, Miss.
Yes, the world's great writers
have portrayed in words the scenes
of happy homes, and poets have
penned inspiring thoughts of them.
The world's famous artists have.
painted upon canvas the beauti-
ful environs of home, and noted
singers have thrilled the heart of
world's people as they brought to
them melody of: "Home, Sweet
Home."
Christ Jesus, the world's Redeem
er, spoke to the posterity of the
ages and said:" In my Father's
house, there are many mansions."
