Four Ways to Lower Blood Cholesterol
In the past ten years, we have read and heard various reports regarding
the negative effects of cholesterol on the body. High blood levels of
cholesterol have been associated with coronary heart disease (one of the
leading causes of death), stroke, angina pectoris, and leg pain caused by
impaired blood circulation.
The negative effects of cholesterol arc generally associated with LDL
(low density lipoprotein) cholesterol, the type of cholesterol that is capable
ofbeine trapped in smallcrblood vessels. THicreare four ways of lowering
LDL blood cholesterol:
1. Diet: Reduce the amount of cholesterol in the diet by eating less eggs,
buttcrfat, ice cream and organ meats such as liver and kidney. Focus on
foods that are high in fiber. Prepare foods by broiling, poaching, steaming,
or stir-frying in vegetable oil.
2. Medicines: Prescription medicines are available if dietary measures do
,not adequately lower blood cholesterol levels.
3. Weight Control: Losing weight (if obese) can lower blood cholesterol
levels.
4. Exercise: Vigorous exercise can lower LDL choleslcrol and help
strengthen the heart.
