Hill's Sewing Center was full of prizes and surprises during the celebration of their 35th year In busi-
ness. Some of the prize winners are pictured here. For details on the celebration results, see the
story on this page.
Hill's Sewing Center names winners
Hill's Sewing Center in Atlanta
recently concluded their big 35th
anniversary sale and they an-
nounced several winners that
have resulted from their anniver-
sary events.
Janice Elliott was the winner of
a $250 Singer Sewing Machine.
Her name was drawn by Emily
Hill, the three-year old daughter of
Leon and JoAnn Hill. Norma
Pinckard was the lucky winner of
a three-drawer sewing machine
chest valued at $200.
Other special prizes included a
$180 water filter.
Specialization common in investments
The friendly staff of Hill's Sew-
ing Center includes Hubert Hill,
Randy Hill and Margie Thomas.
Peggy Dupree is the instructor of
the firm's sewing classes.
Hill's is located at 117 E. Main
in downtown Atlanta.
The investment business has
changed a lot since the middle
1970's when I first became in-
volved as a broker. In those days,
environment was much more
casual. The person who sold
stocks to one client might be sell-
ing commodities to the next client.
There was a relative stability to
the financial markets and there
were far fewer investment
products to keep up with.
Today things are far different.
Competition among investment
companies and insurance com-
panies is intense. The runaway in-
terest rates of the early 80's gave
way to the fastest rising stock
market in history which hit a peak
in October of 1987 when the
famous crash occurred. The
market has rebounded from the
crash and stands today at an all-
time high. Each of these events
has caused a strong movement
toward specialization by success-
ful brokers.
Specializing in one part of the
investment business is a tremen-
dous advantage for the customer.
It is just not possible to be very
good at all aspects of investing.

up with. I know fellow brokers who
have never sold a bond or a C.D.
but are very successful stock
traders. In fact, most of the best
brokers I have known have been
specialists of one type or another.
I personally specialize in conser-
vative income generating invest-
ments. Because I do not attempt
to follow the options market or
commodities I have more time to
study the conservative invest-
ments I handle.
Just as I feel a broker must spe-
cialize in one general type of in-
vestment to do an above-average
job, I feel strongly that a customer
should make every attempt to
match his or her feelings and tem-
perament for risk with that of the
broker they choose. We are
sometimes confronted with a
situation where a perspective
client wants us to follow a variety
of very speculative investments.
We always decline and refer that
person to someone who spends
the time necessary to be
knowledgeable of current events
and potential opportunities in
those investments. You just can't
be good at everything. We do
closely follow CD's, government
bonds, money market funds and
tax-exempt bonds. We also follow
some mutual funds. I estimate
that 80% of our business is done
in one or more of these invest-
ments.
Before you choose a firm or a
broker, remember to apply the
same rules that you would to any
other important decision. Ask
yourself, "Do I see eye-to-eye with
this guy?" "Do I feel comfortable
with the things he says?" If you
can't answer "yes" to those ques-
tions, then you should keep look-
ing until you can
