.MORE MEAT FOR BRITAIN IF
SHIPS ARE AVAILABLE
With Great Britain faced with
a sharp reduction in chc amount
of meat she has been receiving
from the United States, Prime
Minister John Curtln told the Aus-
tralian House of Representatives
during the week that the Govern-
ment was making a survev to see
it' Australia could not send more
meat to,the United Kingdom. Mr.
Curtln added, however, that even
if by further home-front ration-
ing In Australia It were possible
to earmark more meat for Britain
he was doubtful if ships would
te available to transport it. Mr.
Curt in pointed out that some time
ago he had told British Prime
Minister Winston Churchill that
Australia could send Britain more
sugar but Mr. Churchill had re-
plied that shipping was not a-
vailable to enable him to accept
Ihe Australian offer,
To show you the type of think-
ing of a warmaker, we have only
to note the way our own war-
makers are sending our eighteen
year old schoolboys to mass slaugh-
ter. When the warmakers went to
Congress and asked that eighteen
year olds be conscripted from
their schools, the warmakers prom-
ised 'at least a year's training.'
But they would not permit that
provision to be written in the
law.
Quite obviously their reason was
that they had no intention of
obeying the provision, or keeping
their promise. So they unblushing-
ly tell lis now that they are send •
ing our eighteen-year-old school
boys into combat with only Thir-
teen Weeks' Training.
That is exactly what Germany j
and Japan are doing. Warmakers i
have no regard for the common
decencies of mankind. They drive
cur sons into combat without
training, Just as o slaughter-house
operator drives hogs and steers
and sheep down the chute. That
is what our American warmakers
are doing to our sons and v.e
arc standing for tt.. The war-
nnkcrs whe are ^sponsible for

tlaled and shot, just as we say
we nie going to do to the Nazi

There are several kinds of taxes
that most people seem to think
are the same and have the same
effect on the people but there is
as much dlffreence in them as
there is beteen night and day,
they are the sales tax. retail
sales tax, transaction tax, gross
income tax and gross receipts tax.
Briefly in order they etfect the
people in the following manner:
frnles Tax: Is in reality a trans-
ition tax and is only collected
on transactions and only effect
the people who make transactions,
it has nothing to do with income.
Re-tail sales tax: This is a tax
on the last transaction and is
paid by the on? who makes the
purchase at tlie time of the pur-
chase, it, hits those with small
income: the Hardest.
Transaction tax: Is the same as
a sales tax with the word retail
left off. It is collectable at the
time of the transaction and paid
by the one who does the buying.
One may have a million dollar In-
come and yet not be effected by
this tax.
Oross income tax: The courts
have ruled that a gross Income
tax is ones gross income after all
costs have been deducted and
really becomes a gross profits tax,
collected monthly or at any set
date.
Gioss receipts tax: Is a tax on
gross income with out deductions.
H. B. 700 calls for a "tax of
three percentum upon the gross
income of every person or corn-
par, v or gross receipts, (sec sec.
!?i l.o tax on the first 100 dollars
per month.
In a nutshell, the bill is exactly
the s..me as the Townsend plan
till in the National Congress, but
provides for the State of Texas
only, and would result in a very
sufficient income for old people,
since Texas is one of the richest
states in the union.

THE SALE HE DIDN'T MAKE
The Customer asked far a laxative. But as the Fharmacist was wrapping it up for
her she went on to explain that she h d been haVtng seven abdominal pains.... and
the pharmacist quickly recognized the possibility of appendicitis.
He didn't sell the laxative. Instead, he sent the customer to her physician, who
found that her appendix was badly inflamed. Had she unwittingly taken r. laxative,
the appendix might have ruptured, with serious results, if not fatal.
This happens every day in some Pharmacy. Bernese appendicitis often masquerade?
ss an Intestinal upset, it is only natural that many people laok to laxatives for relief,
and hundreds of Hies are probably saved each year by the pharmacist's vigilance over
the sale of these products.
Lr.xative3 or any other medicine are drugs you take to Improve or maintain your
health, the Pharmacist places ever}' possible protection around e«cli sale. If, at times
he seems over-cautious, it is for your well being. This is but one Phase of your Phar-
macist contribution to public health.
