IT'S SELDOM we devote a col-
umn to one single record but
,smr favorite satirist, Stan Freberg,
has come up with a gem that is
worth discussing. ..Called "Green
Christmas," (with dollar signs
through the s's) it is a devastating
takeoff on the commercialization
of Christmas ... He plays the
role of Scrooge, head of a Madi-
son av. advertising firm who is
holding a meeting for various
manufacturers to see who is ad-
vertising what for Christmas . . .
Bob Cratchet is the poor lug who
believes in just wishing people a
merry holiday instead of trying to
'<take" them but he is looked upon
as a kill-joy and a fool.
"Christmas is something to take
advantage of ... a sentimental
shot in the arm for sales," is a
typical bit of dialog . . . Through-
out the nearly seven minutes of
the recording, Freberg thrusts his
satirical lance deep into the gray-
flannel hearts of the ad men . . .
He takes them to task for com-
pletely losing sight of the real
meaning of Christmas and the rea-
son for its being . . . The record-
ing of "Green Christmas," was,
as Freberg puts it, "long overdue
on my personal calendar" after
years of burning indignation at the
commercializing and merchandis-
ing that have turned Christmas
into the huckster's bacchanal that
it ys now ... It was three weeks,
day and night, in the writing, one
week in the recording.
It's humorous but thought-pro-
voking with wit that is razor
sharp and slices deep . . . There's
the Christmas carols trying des-
perately to fight thair way through
the commercial barrier, and the
strains of "Jingle Bells" vainly
struggle against the clanging of a
cash register ... It is, In short, a
masterpiece . . . And lest it be
said Freberg is against advertis-
ing, his principal income each
year comes from Ids own adver-
tising firm . . . But he is also a..
mi7aister's son . . . Flip side has-
beautiful carols to show up the<
real meaning of CHRISTMAS.
Board. The same is true for Dir-
ector's Precinct No. 3, which con-
sists of Bailey, Castro and Par-
mer Counties, and for Director's
Precinct No. 4, consisting of Arm-
strong, Deaf Smith, Potter and
Randall Counties.
Those persons who are quali-
fied voters and reside within the
bounds of the High Plains Under-
ground Water Conservation Dis-
trict ate urged to cast their bal-
lots on January 13. A voter may
cast his ballot at any one of the
voting places within his county.
The problems in connection
with development and use of
underground water in the south-
ern High Plains are problems
that have an effect on everyone
who. lives in the area, regardless
of occupation; consequently it is
most important that capable men
who represent the majority, are
I
elected to these offices.
The voting place in Armstrong
County will be the Wayside school
house, Wayside, Texas.
District Director: (vote for one)
G. A. Dietz, Route 2, Happy, Tex;
