EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS VOL.19, NO.3, FALL 1995
(Gregg Co. - Abstracts from 1879 Newspapers, continued)
TOWN & COUNTY
- Some sickness
- Heavy cotton receipts
- Cotton wagons from Panola, Rusk, Smith, Harrison and Upshur Counties
cover streets this week.
- We saw Judge LOWE of Upshur County in town this week.
- The Methodist and Presbyterian churches were served by their respective
pastors, and both drew respectable congregations.
- It is with a sad heart we this week chronicle the death of Mrs.A.E. BOOTH
the estimable wife of our fellow townsman, Mr. Willis BOOTH. We tender to the
heartstricken.and bereaved husband and little children our sincere sympathy.
- Mr. J.B. ROSSON of the "South Side" presented us with some fine specimens
of apples recently. They were simply superb as to size and flavor.
- Dr. William BRUSH, presiding Elder of the Austin District of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, visited our town last Sunday, and preached a heart
searching sermon in the grove. He was tendered the use of one or more of the
churches, but he preferred the grove. He is an able and eloquent minister.
- John BAPTIST, the pastor of the colored Baptist church in this place
was in to see us this week. John is a very energetic minister and is doing
much good for his race.
- This is the day of atonement with our orthodox Jewish friends. All
business will be suspended from starlight last night until the stars begin
to shine this evening, and the day will be spent in fasting and humiliation.
- We wish to direct the attention of our city authorities to the condition
of the street leading to the cemetery. That wash near the cemetery
should be bridged. We trust that bad place in the road may be put in good
condition before another burial.
- Those boys who, on last Saturday, killed three of Mrs. Boss McDUFFEY's
turkeys, mistaking them for wild turkeys, should pay Mrs. McDUFFEY for the
three they killed. If they will go like little men and pay for the turkeys,
we will not publish their names next week.
-Our old and highly esteemed friend from Upshur County, W. HEART, dropped
in to see us this week. He is one of Upshur's best and most intelligent
citizens. He looks as though he was good for many years service to the
citizens of old Upshur yet.
OUR SICK
- Hon. J.W. FLANAGAN is quite sick. His recovery is regarded doubtful.
- Mrs. DOBBS is improving slowly.
- Mr. HALPERT is in the last stages of consumption.
- Mrs. BRADBURY has been very sick, but we are glad to learn that her
condition is now much improved.
- Mr. W.C. PERRY and wife lost their youngest child on last Thursday
evening. It died of cholera infantum, caused by teething.
