EAST TEXAS FAMILY RECORDS VOL.19, NO.3, FALL 1995
(Smith County - Burns School and The Coplen Community ---- continued)
She said, "I don't tell children lies and you are so smart you know the truth about
things and I'm going to tell you the truth that Santa Claus is just a fairy tale."
She gave me some gifts when my mother wasn't there. See, my mother didn't want her
to tell me, but she told me and I was five years old and remember that as well as
anything.
We lived on Queen Street and I started to school at Marsh School. Lucille Clinkscale
lived on Queen Street, she used to teach and her sister is supposed to be the
teacher for the Sunday School class that I teach now but her health is bad and she
has been out so much that I have been having to teach nearly all the time for over
a year. I am living now on Goodman Street which is only a few blocks from where I
first started out on Queen Street. We moved from there when I was 7 years old
settling in Fort Worth where I received my education.
I've lived in this house once before, (her present residence). When I was trying
to decide whether I wanted to sell my house. I was down there alone after everybody
was gone so I came up here. At first I had my granddaughter with me and she went to
school at Roberts Jr. High School. Then I went back, but decided I wanted to sell
my home. So I've lived in this house twice. The last time I moved here was over
19 years ago, 19 years in March. Friends of mine own it, Tom Wall, now deceased,
and his wife Sara and her brother, J. L. Bailey, Jr. I collect the rent for them
from their property in this block.
I saved some of the old pieces of furniture, for instance, my mother's library table
and my father's bookcase and some of the things out of my home. I just love this
old house and I always have.. So when I decided to move back I didn't need all my
things because this is a duplex. There are two Mexican families on each side of me,
but they are very nice people and look out for me and I help them when I can.
NOTE: TkhA artiice wiLe be continued in the WinteA 1995 East Texas Famity Reco&dt.
