SAGE OF SULPHUR BOTTOM
Here's hew to read paper
to get straight dope on Kerfs'
(Editor's note: The Sage of
Sulphur Bottom on his John-
son grass farm explains how
to read a newspaper, his let-
ter this week indicates.)
Dear editar:
A friend of mine came by
this place yesterday and said:
"Well, have you heard the
good news? Russia has had
five rocket failures recently."
According to him — I didn't
see the account myself —
Russia has tried five times to
send a rocket to Venus and
Mars and has failed.
"I'm sure glad to know
this," he said, "I was begin-
ning to believe they never
failed over there."
What this proves is that a
whole lot of people don't know
liow to read the newspapers.
They read only what's print-
ed instead of going between
the lines. This way t'ney miss
about half the news.
For example, nobody has
ever read that one of Mr.
Khrushchev's automobiles had
a flat tire, but regardless of
how many times a Russian as-
tronaut orbits the earth, you
can't make me believe Rus-
sian tires don't go flat.
I have known for years that
any time a man gets up every
morning to drive a tractor,
sooner or later he's going to
get up one morning and find
one of the tires flat. There is
no system of propaganda and

one-sided reporting that will
keep a tire from going flat,
and by using this same under-
standing I've known for years
that some of Russia's rockets
have fizzled.
Moreover, you never hear
about any Russian planes that
crack up but I'm as sure as I
am that my tractor battery is
going dead eventually that
Russian planes have trouble
too.
What was the traffic acci-
dent toll last week end in
Russia? According to what
you read from that country,
they apparently don't have
wrecks over there, but if Rus-
sia had only two cars, sooner
or later they'd run together,
and I've ieen pictures show-
ing they've got a lot more
than that.
I'm not discounting Russia's
ability, but engines miss and
cars run out of gas and gen-
erators burn out and mufflers
fall off and people get mad
at each other and women gos-
sip and school kids' shoes
wear out over there the same
as they do any place else. I
don't, have to read it in a
paper but I can sit right here
on this Johnson grass farm
and tell you for a fact at least
1,000 Russian farmers could-
n't get their tractors started
this morning.
Why wouldn't a few rockets
sputter too?
Yours faithfully,
J. A.

The bridal shower honoring
Miss Paula Beth Sharpe, now
Mrs. W. L. Hall Jr., was a
nice affair. There were 45
people attending and many
lovely gifts were presented to
the honoree. The shower was
held last Thursday evening at
the school building.
The morning worship serv-
ice was well attended Sunday.
The Rev. Charles Perkins de-
livered a splendid message
from the 10th chapter of Acts
reading from verses 1-33. He
spoke from the theme, "Cor-
nelius, A God Fearing Man,
We Are All Present to Re-
ceive the Word of God."
Miss June Cornett will en-
ter Texarkana College for the
fall semester this week.
Miss Marilyn Wommack re-
turned this week to North
Texas State University at Ben-
ton for the fall term.
Mrs. Minnie Hampton and
Mary Catherine, and Mr. and
Mrs. Elvis Wells, Elaine and
Melba, attended the birthday
celebration for Mrs. Hamp-
ton's mother, Mrs. L. C. Rea,
at Naples Sunday.
Miss Daisy Heard visited her
aunt, Mrs. Anna Mae Steger
of Atlanta, Saturday morning.
Mrs. Max McMichael and
children spent the week end
with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Holmes
of Hughes Springs.
James H. Harrell is at home
for a few days from the base
in New Mexico. On returning
to the army, he will go to
Okinawa.
Mrs. Nora Gibson,
Saturday night with Mr
dred Betts.
Mrs. Charles Perkins, the
pastor's wife, was ill and un-
able to attend church Sun-
day.
Let's not forget church and
Sunday School this fall. Don't
let football games keep you
from attending church activi-
ties.
