Gleanings From
World
1. D. ••FATS'* LOWERY
We seem to be set with the Mis-
sions except for two starting pitch-
ers. We need these two hurliri
badly. If our Padres can maintain
their winning stride we will be tfo-
ing places and doing things all
season long.
The Giants are really doing
their (tuff as per last year. If
hey keep up
that spirit er.d
dash th" world
in general will
recognizo thtm
as one of .he
t r c a t e st ball
clubs ever as-
sembled. The As
under Connie
Mack arvn't «'o-
ing so poorly.
We wish to make a correction in
our column of last week. ('. H. w-
ard, known to the wrestling fans
as Cyclone Carl, ran on both the
400 and 880 yard relay teams
that were victorious in the Sam
Huston relays.
At the State InterscholastiC meet
at Prairie View last Friday Phyl-
lis Whcatley's track team finished
4th in the standings. M. Morris ran
second in the hundred yard da*h,
K. Edwards ran second in the 220
yard low hurdles, R. Wright placed
second in the shot put and discus.
J. Cunningham ran third in the
880 yard run, I. D. Brown tied for
third in the pole vault. W. Stewart
tied for fourth in the high jump
■nd Lyons ran fourth in the mile.
Knowles ran fourth in the 220. All
these men earning points. Mori is,
Lyons, Knowles and Cunnirgham,
composed the mile relay team that
tan second to B. Washington Uttfh
"of Dallas, who by the way
won th« meet. Jack Yates of
Houston came second. Phyllis
Wheat ley of Houston, third and
Phyllis Wheatley of San Antonio
fourth.
We may say that the following
dates for football games for n*xt j
season are closed: Nov. 2nd. Cor- 1
sicana, who has been famous for I
years for their great football i
teams; Austin on Nov. 12, Dallas
on Nov. 16, Corpus on Dec. 8. Ja< k
Yates ,of Houston will be here on
either Oct. 16 or Nov. 23. We sin-
cerely hope the people will support
their team. Give the boys a break

Spring Practice for
Football Begins
at Wheatley High
Upon Coach Lowery's return
from the Prairie View relays, he
immediately issued a call for 'pring
football practice with about hirty
men registering the first day.
More are expectcd daily. On inter-
viewing Coach Lowcry we find that
he felt spring practice a necessity
to prepare the Wheatley squad f. r
the grilling schedule that awaits
it next fall. He showed us sigted
contracts with Corsicana, Dallas,
Austin and Corpus and informed us
that contracts are in the mails for
games between two of the Houston
schools and Ft. Worth. He sta'es
that arrangements are being at-
tempted so us to play the maj:r
games at night. Lowcry said he did
not know just how successlul re
would be in that. The Athletic com-
mittee is formulating a plan fcr
season tickets that will enable tie
public through purchase of there
season tickets to see the best sche-
dule ever played locally at s cost
of 21 cents a game. Let's help
Wheatley.

After being the doormat for eve-y

years the Lions have at last turned
on their tormcnters. Starting ta.t

won one meet and placed third in
another besides winning a bi% full
of medals. Even the "Good OLD"
Wheatley A. A. has done itseli
proud by awarding sweaters to the
different teams, and that is really
something. Since that miracle has
happened, we believe the depref-
sion is over or something.

Uncle Sam is providing what is
known as the Citizens Military
Training Camp. Youths between the
ages of eighteen and twenty-fire
are eligible to join. Going to one
of these camps in no way obligates
you to join the army or go lo wrr.
In fact It's nothing worse than a
swell vacation at the expci.se of
"Uncle." You will be paid a dol'ar
a day plus yqur transportation to
and from camp. They also clothe
you and supply board and lodging.
In order to make such a trip then
must be an enrollment of at least
one hundred and fifty boys. Ail
those interested will kindly get in
touch with me at once.
Eligio Sardinas, Kid Chocolate,

announced his return by winning
an easy decision over Frankie Wal-

Kid Chocolate Gets
Decision in Match
Tillotson Hans 53rd Commencement
San Francisco.—(ANP)— Decid-
edly outpointing Frankie Wallace
In a fast and furious bout before
8,000 fans here, Kid Chocolate won
a referee's decision in Monday
night's go.
The only knockdown came in the
third round when the Cuban drop-
ped Wallace with a terrific right
for a no count. In every round they
fought toe to toe and slugged with
vicious abandon.
This bout was a ten-rounder.
This was Chocolate's second de-
cision over Wallace, who holds a
decision over Frankie Klick. Klick
took away the Keed's junior light-
weight title by a knockout.
Chocolate may face Baby Arit-
mendi in Los Angeles late this
month.
