Agenda for the 80s
Clear the decks. The United States has a new
president and a fresh start at solving problems which seem
to have attached themselves to our country like barnacles
on an ocean liner.
In setting his priorities, we don't think President Reagan
will pay much attention to the President's Commission for a
National Agenda for the 80's. The Agenda Commission's
report, issued Jan. 16, is an example of what's wrong. After
admitting the federal government often can't run a new
program so that it works, the group calls for national health
insu/ah'te, a guaranteed income of two thirds to three
quarters of whatever is decided as the poverty level
income, public funding for Congressional election races and
lots of reorganizing, not elminating, of different bureaus and
agencies.
The constant' shuffling of government departments and
bureaus is one good reason why the federal government is
so inefficient.
An agenda for the 80s that would work wonders would
include fewer government programs, harder working civil
servants, more disposable income in the pockets of working
Americans, a military machine that is lean and mean,
trained and equipped with advanced weapons that won't
jam, less did from Washington and more reliance and
responsibility at home. Yes, and practical protection of civil
rights and the environment.
Here in Bastrop we are also getting a fresh start with
new City Mgr. Jerry McFadden and possibly three new
Council members in ApriL Next week we'll discuss an
agenda for our hometown.
Bentsen hits windfall tax
Senator Lloyd Bentsen
last week introduced legisla-
tion to exempt from the
"windfall profit" tax the first
1,000 barrels of oil a day
pumped within the U.S. by
an independent producer.
Both producers and royal-
ty owners would be exempt
under the bill.
"If we are sincerely con*
cerned about increasing do-
mestic oil and gas produc-
tion, I can think of no more
efficient or effective way to
go about it Year after year
it has been demonstrated
that independent producers

Dcmce decision
Dear Editor:
While reaing the Adver-
tiser, I came across the
article "Open Prom a Closed
Debatf," (January 12. 1981
issue.)
I have no children in BHS
this matter in a more ob
jective manner than those
who are directly involved.
First I would like to ask
the paternal group (Superin-
tendent Bell, the BISI) prin
cipnls. and the School Board)
a few questions. Who is the
Prom for the students or
the paternal group? Is this
~Jusl another big party w A <luU> of thnir choict'
crowning moment in some can't the students?
young peoples lives? Do we Would it not be better to
live in an open or closed
society? How can anyone in
the paternal group feel they
have made the right decision
when the decision is totally
subjective, biased*-and hypo-
critical? The paternal group
can bring their spouse or
compromise on this matter?
Treat the young adults like
young adults and not
children. These ^ young
people are going to be living"
in the world, not BHS. To
rob them of this moment
could affect them for many

invest $105 in new produc-
tion for every $100 they
generate in revenue, and
this at a time we need every
drop of oil we can produce
in this country," Bentsen
said in Senate remarks ac-
companying his bill.
'NO SENSE'
we want to make
maximum effective use of
our energy assets in Ameri-
ca, it simply makes no sense
to place a windfall profit tax
on the first 1,000 barrels of
daily production from our
independent producers. It
makes no sense to take $22
billion out of,production over
this decade." '
The Senate, in November
1979, approved a Beptsen
amendment to the so-called
"windfall profit" tax which
would have provided the
1,000 barrel a° day ex-
emption for independent
producers. The House ver-
sion of the "windfall tax"
