City joins Katy in rail merger opposition
Smithville's City Council
Monday night passed a reso-
lution to aid the Missouri
Kansas Texas RaOroad Co.
in its fight against a railroad
acquisition by rival Union
Pacific Railroad.
Katy is opposing Union
Pacific taking over the Mis-
souri Pacific and Western
Pacific.
With Alderman Robert
Smith abstaining, the Council
voted to side with Katy.
The resolution, which is
expected to reach the Inter-
state Commerce Commis-
sion, notes that "Smithville
owes its existence to "the
Katy. The railroad built the
city and is still its largest
employer and any action
that adversely affects the
railroad's revenues could
hurt the city, the Council
pointed out.
Katy has estimated that
the proposed acquisitions
could divert over $20 million
a year worth of freight
away from the Katy. 7 ;
Live oaks
to edge hospital
Twenty-four live oak trees have been donated to
beautify the grounds of Bastrop Memorial Hospital.
The trees were donated to the Bastrop Memorial Hospital
by Bill Hauser, M.D. in living memory of his father, W.P.
Hauser who was an Iowa farm boy who got a degree in
History and Theology from Drake University in 1916. His
interest in plants and plant propagation was stimulated a
few years later when he worked as a technician in a
pioneer project, thought by many to be Tom Foolery at
that time. The project later lead to widespread acceptance
of its product, hybrid corn. He began growing nursery
citrus and ornamental nursery trees in San Juan and
McAUen, Texas in 1924.
Live Oak trees, Quercus Virginia, are native throughout
most of the Southern United States. There is quite a bit of
seedling and hybrid variation in the leaf form and in the
growth habit of these trees. The trees planted here are
quite fast growing, due to a selection process developed by
Washstorn Nurseries in Freemont, Texas. Acorns are
selected from second or third generation known as
fast-growing parent trees. The acorns are then planted
directly in rows in the field where they sprout close
together like milo maise. After the first year, the slower
growing seedlings are uprooted and discarded, leaving only
the faster growing seedlings. These trees are then grown
three to five years, when they are dug, balled and wrapped
in burlap or placed in seven gallon containers for sale.
The reputation for very slow growth, which live oak
trees have, was obtained because the trees grow so slowly
in nature where limited rainfall limits their growth. If these
trees are watered heavily and fertilized adequately, their
growth rate will exceed that of faster growing trees such as
Arizona Ash.
With Dr. Hauser's assistance, the sites have been staked
aryl the-teeefr^ure in the process of being planted.
The Bastrop Hospital Authority said it is deeply
apiprec&ftfe' to#DI\" Fraritfer, the hospital's radiologist, and
looks forward to the beauty these trees will add to the
hdspital setting. "
