OF SAN ANTONIO

Douglas MacArthur High School, San AntonioSAN ANTONIO is a cultural melting pot with
dozens of different cultures enriching its mix-
ture. One of the dominant cultures in terms of
economics and education has been that of the
Germans. The churches, businesses, and homes
that these people built still dominate the city
as reminders of their influence. Yet the true
measure of any culture lies within its capacity
to transmit its values and ideals to its younger
generation. It was toward that end that the
German-English School of San Antonio was
established.The German-English School was founded on
April 2, 1858, by a group of German immi-
grants known as the Lateiner, named because
of their scholastic backgrounds, which included
a knowledge of Latin. Before founding the
school, this group had been instrumental in
establishing several organizations, including
the Casino Association and the Krankenhaus
Verein, a group which promulgated a primitive
form of health insurance. The Casino Associa-
tion formed the foundation of the school so-
