Marine Lieutenant,
Here On Leave, Tells
About Strafing Japs
When Marine Lieutenant William
C. Webb, 22-year-old fighter pilot,
spotted the Tateyama air strip on
the eastern side of the peninsula of
Tokyo Bay for the first time and
started down for the surprise raid
on the Japs, he got a thrill of a
lifetime.
"There was a large collection of
Japs around a plane, and while I
was strafing, I noticed some bodies
topple over, but I didn't have time
to count them," he said. "It was
there that we destroyer two planes,
and headed for home."
Lieutenant Webb and his Wolf-
pack Squadron took a crack at Jap
shipping, too, when he and two
other pilots sank two picket boats
and set a third afire. He flew a
total of 25 combat missions, holds
the Distinguished Flying Cross and
five Air Medals.
He has been visiting at the home
of his sister and brother-in-law, the
D. S. McKays of 3720 Plumb, and
will return to California after his
30-day leave. He is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. W. C. Webb, Sr., of Hous-
ton. His wife and their baby have
been living in Webster while Lieu-
tenant Webb was in the Pacific.
