We'll bet the family didn't get
much sleep that night, but Melanie
Strasse of 3320 Rice Boulevard had
a big time when she celebrated her
15th birthday recently by having
five guests for a slumber party and
breakfast. . . .
E. O. "Slim" Willis, who recently
bought the Humble Station at 2416
University Boulevard, is looking
forward to the day—and soon—
when his wife and son will arrive
from Lampasas. The 12-year-old is
his dad's "partner" and will be seen
around the station frequently dur-
ing the summer vacation. . . .
After 30 months in Axis prison
camps, Lt. David K. Westheimer is
on the way home. And that's the
best news his mother, Mrs. Adolf
Westheimer of 2213 Dorrington,
has heard in a long time. . . .

It s SIMPLE enough to go into the story of Memorial Day. Why we observe it . . . with
what reverence we gather at the monument to the unknown soldier. But if our reverence ends
there, we've accomplished nothing and all the fighting that's been done has been in vain;
all that's been fought for becomes a dream, still in the far distant future. !f we remember
that the quest for peace does not end the day the last shot is fired, that we haven't achieved
the glowing goal of PEACE with the end of hostilities, we shall have learned a masterful les-
son. Let us resolve this day to take part in the peace plan for the future, to be aware of
our government's attitudes and actions.
