STIRPES JUNE 1993
President's Page
Several important items may be of interest to you as June rolls around and we find ourselves
halfway through another year. Our individual memberships continues to increase and we welcome
about a dozen new partner societies who have joined us this year. It's exciting to see your state society
growing and getting active again.
Mark the first weekend in November on your calendar as the dates of our annual state
conference. We are moving to the Omni Hotel in downtown Austin just a few blocks from the Texas
State Library. The hotel has recently undergone some nice renovations and is excited about hosting
our conference. We anticipate a large number of participants this year and will be looking for you.
Our schedule will remain the same as in past years with an orientation meeting on Thursday night
for those planning to research at the State Library and Archives, Friday morning time for research,
a selection of 10-12 mini-sessions on Friday afternoon, awards banquet on Friday night, and our
feature speaker on Saturday.
We invite you to make suggestions for the mini-session topics and speakers. What would you
like to hear about? What do you need information about? Would you like to recommend someone
to present a session? Send us your ideas.
Helen F.M. Leary from North Carolina will present four lectures on Saturday. Since she was
in Lubbock this spring and will be in Dallas in August, we are choosing topics that she did not present
at those seminars. She is very complimentary of Texas genealogists and says she finds most of us
more advanced researchers than groups she speaks to elsewhere. Ms. Leary will also be available
on Friday afternoon to present a session on certification
Arlee Gowen, our electronic library chairman, continues to keep TSGS in the telecommunications
spotlight. On June 5 we placed our electronic library and bulletin board system on
nationwide satellite transmission. This expansion of our research services now means that genealogists
can receive the data on their satellite receivers at no charge when in the past they have had to
pay telephone toll charges for their downloads. The satellite transmission will carry 60 different
genealogical conferences generated by FidoNet and the new network, Worldwide Genealogy
Associates originating in Europe. Look for more information and details in the TSGS Newsletter or
call Arlee at 806-795-8758.
Arlee and Gene Mathis, our systems operator, are waiting for an invitation from your local
genealogical society to present a program about our electronic library, bulletin board system, and
satellite transmission. If your members need information about using their computers to access
genealogical information, Arlee and Gene are willing to explain it. They presented a program to the
Computer Council of Dallas genealogical group in May and to the Alamo Personal Computer
Organization in San Antonio in early June.
TSGS also continues to provide pioneer certificates to individual members who had an
ancestor in Texas prior to 1886 or in West Texas prior to 1901. The TSGS Newsletter and the
Electronic Library will carry the list of pioneer certificates issued and the names of ancestors. Why
not add yours to the list? The certificates make beautiful presents and only cost $15 each. Write for
an application today.
Happy Hunting,
Marynell Bryant
