We often receive requests from members, particularly out-of-state members, asking us to
check our library's holdings for a particular book or information on a particular surname. As most
of you know TSGS does not own nor operate a library but rather we choose to support the Texas State
Library's genealogy collection. All books and periodicals that we receive for review and for writing
award competition are donated to the TSL. Other genealogical and historical societies also support
the library with their donations and gifts.
The arrival this month of the newly revised TSL's Circulating Genealogy Duplicates List
reminded me of the importance our contributions make to the library. The List represents a
collection of duplicate materials which are available to other libraries through interlibrary loan.
Since genealogy materials are frequently difficult to obtain through normal interlibrary loan
channels, the availability of this collection at TSL will benefit researchers with otherwise limited
access to genealogical materials. Please note that the List is nota guide to the Genealogy Collection,
but only a list of duplicate holdings; these are only the books and microfilm available for loan.
Every library and genealogical society should have a copy of the TSL's Circulating
Genealogy Duplicates List for their patrons to use. Copies of the List are not available to
individuals but institutions may request a copy by writing the Genealogy Collection, Texas State
Library, P.O. Box 12927, Austin TX 78711. In addition to the printed list, the information is
available for downloading through LIBRA, the Texas State Library's electronic bulletin board at
(512) 463-5464.
Books on the list include family histories as well as a broad spectrum of published materials
from almost every state. The materials are not limited to Texas research. Books and films are
available for four week loans. Each library must limit its requests to two per patron and four per
library per week. We encourage genealogists to take advantage of this service in two ways. Check
the list for materials you may need to use. But more importantly, keep the TSL in mind when you
are weeding your own collection or when you make donations.
And that goes double for genealogical societies. Many of our local libraries contain duplicate
copies of books and other genealogical materials. Remember that books given to the Texas State
Library will benefit researchers across the state. Make a donation today.
Happy Hunting,
Marynell Bryant
