Crosses Burn as
Physician Moves
Into New Home
By The A ••©dated Negro Press
KNOXV1LLB, Tenn.—Fiery
crosses and mimeographed letters
signed "KKK" were reported seen
throughout the city when l)r. E. F.
Lenon nnd his family moved into
their new home on Dnndririge IMke
in i predominantly white neighbor-
hood here last week.
A few weeks ago, while the I.en-
nons were making some repairs to
the new home, they received notes
warning them not to attempt to
occupy the house. A burning cross
was planted on the lawn of the
house, and a charge of dynamite
exploded nearby.
Last week, burning crosses were
reported in four scattered points,
one of which was near a white Bap-
tist church where a few Negroes
11 ye Mimeographed letters signed
''KKK" and left at 18th street and
West Cumberland avenue, stated
certain views of Klansmen and also
sought new members for the hooded
order.

Georgia Convicts
Postal Employee for
Relief of Self
By The Associated Negro Press
ATLANTA, (Ja.—Robert L.
Smith, a postal employee, was
convicted and sentenced to four
years imprisonment in Fulton
county criminal court last week
where he was tried for relieving
himself in a wooded area near
the white-populated BucUhead
section.
Smith was assigned to deliver
mail in the section which af-
forded no toilet facilities to col-
ored transients. He had found a
somewhat desolate, wooded spot
to relieve himself.
The charge*, were that he had
been seen relieving himself by
white w o m e n, who preferred
charires.
Smith testified that he was a
faithful employee of the gov-
ernment and always did his
best to carry out his duty, lie
admitted that he had frequent-
ed the spot mentioned in the
charges, bnt said that he had no
other facilities and sought this
particular spot for he consider-
ed it secluded.
He stated that it was not his
Intent to commit an art of im-
morality and that he had no
previous court record. The pris-
oner said that connty officers
questioning him about the ac-
cusations furiously beat him
over the head in an effort to
make him plead guilty.
Defense counsel implored the
all-white jury to put itself in
Smith's place while delivering
mail in an all-white section, but
adn.itted that this was almost
impossible for white people al-
ways had facilities wherever
they went.
Judge John Me■( lelland flatly
pronounced maximum sentence
on each of four counts.

Citizens' Sport of
Hunting Negroes
To End in S. C.
Uy The Aanortnted Negro Prers
COLUMBIA, S. C.—Citizens
posses are on the way out In South
Carolina.
Sheriff Alex T. Helse deprived
nearly 1,000 whites last week of long-
er enjoying the Negro manhunt
allegedly aimed to find the Negro
man who twice attacked an elderly
Edgewood white woman, by sending
theui home following reports of
lioodlumlsm against Negroes.
The sheriff revealed that "a
group of Columbia and county pas-
tors, representatives of civic groups,
"conferred" with him "and protested
allowing a posse to form and com-
mit acts against Negroes." Future
searches In ordlnnry cases will be
conducted by law enforcement of-
ficers, Helse said, "without assist-
ance from citizens. Only In emergen-
cy cases will "the good, law-abiding
citizens" l>e called upon to offer
their services, the sheriff announced.
Included In the 1,000-man citizens
posse that assisted more than 200
city, county and state peace officers
was a 12-year-old boy. who shoul-
dered a shotgun taller than he.
Disbanding of the citizen posse does
not mean relaxation of the search
and investigation of the assailant,
Sheriff Helse said. He explained
that the vastness of the Edgewood
area necessitated the citizen posse.
"The committee was composed of
Dr. C. L. 11111. the Rev. M. Cox. the
Rev. B. B. Felder, the Rev. A. L.
Peterson, the Rev. J. P. Reeder,
James M. Hinton, Dr. R. XV. Mance.
the ltev. L. C. Jenkins, the Rev. J.
C. Spans, the Rev. II. L. Taylor,
the Rev. S. V. Fowler and XV. B.
Johnson," the sheriff disclosed.
They protested ''the widely-pub-
licised statements that a Negro
committed crime." he said, "until
such time as such was substantiat-
ed, and asked, that a clarification
be made of the Edgewood case as
soon r.s It was known who the guilty
party Is." Helae said "Dr. C. L. Hill,
the spokesman, said 'Negroes are
for law and order, and will not
condone crime, but they expect con-
stituted law enforcement agencies
to track down and arrest guilty
persons."'
WOMAN ADMITS LIE
Meanwhile local polite dis-
closed that a white woman
confessed her Negro attack story
was a hoax. Tlie woman, not
the same person in the Edge-
wood case, had reported to
police that a Negro man attack-
ed her last week at Taylor and
Pirkens street. The woman
signed a ronfcsslon that the al-
leged attack was "cither a

sult of too much to drink.**
