It's ironic that the
deadline for Sadaarr.
Hussein to get out of
Kuwait was on the birth
of the late Dr. Martin
Luther King, a man who
preached non violence. It
also strikes me as a
little strange that
President Bush could not
sign a civil rights bill,
but 30 per cent of the
415,000 sojdiers in the
Persian Gulf are Black.
(Slacks cau sacrifice
their lives lor this
country, but our
President does not see
fit to continue improving
the .conditions for
Blacks irv this country.
Among those who will
be called to active duty
in this war is the Rev.
Jerry W. Dailey, pastor
of Macedonia Baptist
Church. Rev. Dailey,
who is a chaplain in the
Reserves, told me, "I am
preparing for the worst
and praying. for the
best." The worst has
happened and we join
Rev. Dailey in praying
that the best can still
occur. As this nation
engages in this' war, I
would like to share parts
of a letter from one of
our young men stationed
in the Gulf: "We are
located so close to the
line I know this is it. It
rained last night and the
thunder and lightning
Rev. Dailey
May go to Persian Gulf
made a glow that we
watched each other. We
get one to four hours of
sleep daily. The heat is
a b....but some how we
stay sharp. Not in my
Wildest dreams have 1
been this cold. No snow
just a b...of a wind chill
all the way to the bone.
No matter what we do,,
it is the same every
day."
, The soldier went on: "1
pack as much ammo
that 1 can handie, but
it's no use....they pack
also."
"I pray something good
could come from all this
but who really cares."
During these troubled
times, let pray twst our
soldiers can come nWne
safely. \

San Antonio Spurs
star David Robinson
helped get 1991 off .to a
big start for the 90 fifth
grade students at Gates
Elementary School in the
San Antonio School
District.
The superstar cent*er
Friday announced his
sponsorship of the entire
5th grade class at Gates
in the "I Have A Dream"
program and brought
along• a check
representing a $2,000
incentive scholarship for
each of the 90 children.
"The evening really
was douhly rewarding for
these students," said
Tom Gaffney, vice
president of the SASD
Board of Education.
"David Robinson has>
gotten the ball rolling so
that these students can
have the guarantee of a
scholarships when they
graduate from high
school. In addition, just
seeing this outstanding
athlete up close and
personal and posing for
■photographs with him
was something of a
reward in itself."
Gaffney praised
Robinson and the
Robinson Group headed
bv his parents for
showing their concern to
the community: "David
"Robinson and his family
have shown that they
have made San Antoni
their home and that they
are going to help in this
community in many
ways. It's a wonderful
way to give something
back to the city that has
embraced David
Robinson as one of our
own.!'
Robinson's donation
will be deposited with
the San Antonio Area
Foundation, trustee for
the scholarship funding
of the "1 Have A
Dream'" Foundation in
San Antonio.
The Gates students are
the second group of
SASD students to be
adopted as "dreamers,"
Gaffney said. Last year's
fifth grade class at
Briscoe Elementary
School was selected as
thp first class in the
city.
The essential purpose
of "I Have A Dream" is
to encourage at risk
students, principally
minority youngsters, to
finish high school and go
to college. The tutition
guarantee is
instrumental to the
purpose.
' In addressing the Gates
students and their
parents, Robinson also
urged the San Antonio
community to support
the Foundation through
matching donations.
Contributions • are
needed, not only for the
actual scholarships, but
also to maintain the
constant support program
that will help keep the
"dreamers" in school
through high school
graduation so that they
can take advantage of
the scholarship opportun-
ity Robinson has made
available to them.
