slated to be awarded in the se
cond annual National Fajita
Cookoff Championship Saturday,
May 16, in Moran. More than 100
teams are expected to enter the
event.
The first place winner will be
awarded $1,000. Second through
fifth place will divide from a total
purse of $650 in <-ash and prizes.
In addition, the showmanship
category will be awarded prizes
for first through third from a
total purse of $575.
Mike Parsons, member of the
Moran Yacht Club, sponsor of the
event, stated that Saturday,
May 16, promises to be a great
day for everyone in the family."
In conjunction with the cookoff,
numerous events will be held
throughout the day for the enter
tainment of attendants.
The National Fajita 5000 meter
run will start the day's activities
as area running enthusiasts will
vie for prizes in both male and
female divisions. The course is set
to run through the city and sur
rounding area of Moran

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m.,
with the course running partly
through town and in the country.
Trophies will be awarded to the
first three finishers in each age
category. T-shirts will be given to
the first 150 entries.
A cash prize of $25 will be
awarded to the best costume
worn by any runner who registers
and finishes the 3.1 mile course.
Entry fees are $6 for those
under age 12, and $7 for age 12
and older Registration on the day
of the race will be $9. Fruit,
drinks and water will be provided
at the finish line.
Age categories for men and
women are 19 and under, 20-24,

60 and older.

A new event added this year is
the National Fajita Queen
Championship. The event is open
to anyone ages 18-28 years old.
The winner of the event will be
the official spokesperson of the
cookoff, and will win a Caribbean
vacation for two.
Nicki Harle, director of the
Cisco Junior College Wrangler
Belles and chairperson of the
event, stated, "This promises to
be more than a beauty pageant.
The winner will be judged on per
sonality, enthusiasm, poise and
fajita spirit."'
Local and area merchants and
artists will offer their wares
throughout the day during the
Arts and Crafts Show and Sale.
According to Steve Waller, chair
man of the show and sale, more
than 120 artists from as far away
as Houston and San Antonio will
attend the event.
'We feel the artists which have
indicated they will attend will be
very impressive and they will of
fer something for everyone who
attends the cookoff," Waller said.
A popular attraction at last
year's cookoff was the fine arts
show and sale. Gwen Taggart,
chairman of the event, said the
show and sale will feature some of
the states' top artists. Due to the
popularity of the event, special
facilities have been arranged and
built for the show and sale, which
should he one of the highlights of
he day long festivities.

be a special appearance by the
current Miss Texas, Stephany
Samone, a barbecue supper and
an old fashioned street dance.
Also, a day long country and
western musical will be held and a
food fair throughout the day will
offer all those attending a variety
of homecooked foods.
Other events slated include a
"liar's contest," and a fiddler's
contest will also be held.
Morris D. Snyder, Jr., chairman
of this year's cookoff, stated,
"Last year those who attended
had a super time, and this year
should be even greater. The
showmanship judging was an
event in itself, and this year it
should be even more
entertaining."
Ten prominent West Texans
have been selected to select
America's finest fajita cook.
Travis Sears and Tom Perini of
Buffalo Gap will head the judging
team comprised of State
Representative Rick Perry of
Haskell, Cindy Stenholm of Stam
ford, Fran Atkins of Abilene, Joe
Allen of Abilene, Charlie Jordan
of Abilene, Robert Echols of
Dallas, Kay Dienholf of Abilene
and Janice Jacobs of Abilene.
Travis Sears will head up the
judging team. Sears is a noted
fundraiser for the Abilene Boys
Ranch and is the founder of the
Buffalo Gap Chili Cookoff. He will
be assisted by Tom Perini, a
noted outdoor chef who is the
owner of Perini Ranch Catering
and Restaurant.
State Representative Rick
Perry of Haskell will join Cindy
Stenholm of Stamford to add
political flavor to the judging
team. Mrs. Stenholm is the wife of
U.S. Congressman Charles
Stenholm.
Fran Atkins and Kay Dienholf
are two area television per
sonalities. Atkins is the co-anchor
of KTAB noon and 6:00 p.m. news
casts. Dienholf is anchor person
for KRBC TV in Abilene.
Joe Allen of Abilene and
Robert Echols of Dallas will lend
their cooking experience to the
team of judges. Allen is known
statewide for his barbecue and is
the owner of Joe Allen's and
Cahoot's in Abilene, as well as be
ing a noted outdoor caterer
Erhols is the owner of a Dallas
restaurant, and has over 20
years of experience in outdoor
catering.
Charlie Jordan will return to
add his personal touch to this
year's event. Jordan is director of
the Abilene Boys Ranch and is
also known for his down home wit,
and charm as a KTAB TV
weat herman
Janice Jacobs, a teacher in the
Abilene Public Schools system, is
best known as the official spokes
person for West Texas Utilities
Company during their commer
cial spots.

Immunization clinic set
An immunization clinic con
ducted by the Texas Department
of Health and Human Services
has been set for May 11 in Albany
at the Chamber of Commerce of
fice from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00
noon.
The clinic will be offering all of
the immunizations needed for the
next school year, as well as
routine immunizations. Vaccina-
tions for DTP idiptheria, tetanus
and pertussin', oral polio and
MMR 'measles, mumps and
rubellai will be administered.
Parents are asked to bring
their child's immunization record
with them to the clinic.
A TD shot (tetanus and dip
theriai is also available for
children over the age of seven
years.
"It is time for children to start
their series of immunizations if
they haven't already done so in
order to be able to register
for school," said a nurse with the
depart ment.
The clinic is open to all
qualified families, and services
are provided at a rate based on
their income and number of fami-
ly members.
"We have a chart for people to
use to determine if they are eligi-
ble for free immunizations, or if
they are required to pay a small
fee."
The clinic is usually held on the
second Monday of odd numbered
months in Albany.
The nurses will not be return
ing until July, and then again in
September.
Historical group meets
The recently re activated
Shackelford County Historical
Commission met Monday night at
the Old Jail Art Center to elect of
ficers and plan projects for the
coming year.
The group elected Reilly Nail
as chairman, Joan Farmer as vice
chairman and Lorene McComas
as secretary treasurer.
Plans were made for several
projects for the upcoming year. A
group of commission members
will tour the county courthouse
on Thursday, May 7, to make
recommendations to the Commis-
sioner s Court concerning the
historic structure.
The commission is appointed by
the commissioners for two-year
terms.
Several new members were
recently appointed to the commis
sion, with a total of 22 members
present at the meeting.
The group also plans to keep
the Picket House located at the
Bank Park open during Fan
dangle performance days for
visitors to tour. Members will
also be on hand at the courthouse
to answer questions and conduct
tours during the Fandangle.
Joan Farmer and Audrey
Brooks agreed to plan a tour of
old Shackelford County school
sites in the future. Other
historical tours are also being
planned for the commission and
the general public.
The commission voted to start
work on obtaining historical
markers for several county sites
and institutions. The Albany
Npvs was selected as the reci
pient of the first marker the
group will work towards obtain
ing. Mrs. Farmer was selected to
head to the research committee
for the project.
