Capt. Taylor Gets
Silver Star
Capt Richard M. Taylor, soil
of Mrs. Lydia Taylor of Albany*
lun received the Silver Star clta«
tion for conspicuous service In
Korea. Me has been in the Korean
war since last summer.
The citation, In part, follows:
"For conspicuous gallantry and
intrepidity in action against the
enemy with a Marine Tank battal-
ion in the vicinity of Yongdongpo,
Korea, 21 Sept., IPaO. Captain
Taylor displayed outstanding per-
severance, aggressiveness and lead-
ership while serving as a tank
company commander. Having or-
dered all tanks In his company to
pull back in order to refuel and
rearm, lie received word at approx-
imately I M)0 i (', p. ill.) on 21 Sept.
that an infantry company had been
cut off, pinned down and was un-
able to communicate with adjacent
or parent unit- so as to tie in tho
defensive sectors for the night. On
hi own initiative he hastily organ-
ized a tank platoon and proceeded
forward to the company which was
being -ubjected to an intense ene-
my attack by forces employing
mall arms, automatic weapons and
mortar from ranges as close as
200 yard . With absolute disre-
-ard for his own personal safety,
lie expo I'd hi in -el f to enemy fire,
leaving his tank and delivering
radio hutterio to the company
commander lie then returned to
his tank and directed his platoon
in mch an expeditious and effici-
ent manner that the enemy s Ore
wa neutralized and the company
wa able to move to more advan-
tageous terrain under the covering
lire of In tank
"Hi- timely actions and profes-
sional ' knowledge ,ir tank tactics
-erveil as an Inspiration to all who
observed him and were directly in-
strumental in the success achieved
during the engagement. Captain
Taylor's heroic actions were in
keeping with the highest traditions
of the F S. Naval service,
Oliver C Smith,
Major General,
