ON US WAY TO CALIFORNIA
E! Paso, Texas,
June 11, 1927.
To Hon. Richard McCarty,
Albany, Texas.
Dwr Dick:
Juat started to write to Al Smith, another red-headed Irishman who lives
in a town named Albany. Then I recollected that it w:is so far to A! Smith'::
Albany it would take too much to send him a I *tter, so I'd stu>ot on * l >
you here in Texas.
I am on my second loco expedition to Californy. It makes me think a
lot lew of myself every time I go. Just why tli«* Stat,- doesn't buiid more
asylums for the accommodation of fellows who will T'ns th • d 's-m* and
pay 80 cents a gallon to see a country that isn't half as pretty as Ti*xas,
is more than I can understand.
If Texas people keep a fcoinjf to California, I am jjoin* to run for (inv-
entor on a platform with just three words in it—"Uuild More Asylums."
It is so warm out this way that the hens Uy their ej^s already hard-
boiled. This is the oriifi:ial starting place of hot dogs. Every day about
noon when the sweat runs down my suspenders and the sun says, "I'll b'-t
1 get .you yet," I get up my dander against old Volateu'l. No Irishman
would ever have dried up the country and ruined the price ot' corn.
Roads are bad enough and hi-jackers are worse. You think you have
struck a hi-jacker, every time you fill your •: ;• with gas. It'; b.—n s •ttin.j
higher and higher all the way up here. The iltitude seems to r>"gulat«> ft"
price—and if it does, I'll be glad when we start down on th" other side of
the Rockies.
Would like to stay here until the Press Meet. But if my :non is to hold
out to see Californy. I must not. ^o with old !' nk and Arthur and yourself
to Juarez.
They say the worst road: are ahead of us. They have >een bad enough
behind us. The Indian* had sense enough to ri le th r •> ,iv - irt > (bi-
section. They were smarter than anybody wiio tries it in i ir
mortals and some of these days before a great, great while we will all goj
over there and hold our annuul gathering with them.
There are a lot of true men in this world. Yet, when one like lui.e quit: j
us, I feel a distinct loss. We will miss him because he was or e we could
swear with and swear by.
Give my love and Mrs. C's. love to other members of the family and ;
reserve a great bitth- full for yourself.
Goodbv,
i
Aust n Caiian.
Pray for :tie while I f>ump up tires on the hot desert. I'll say things
that wouldn't iook well in a song book.

DE-URBANIZING AMERICA
| | The small town finds electric power a strong ally. As
| I the evolution of industry turns into a new and brighter
I | phase, factories are released from concentration in
^ I densely populated urban centers. To a substan tial ex-
tent this has been made possible by the transmission of
electric power from advantageously located generat-
ing stations, efficiently operated and adequate in ca-
pacity, to communities for miles around; sometimes
bringing electric service for the first time; sometimes
replacing inadequate local plants.
With the assurance to the small community of ample
and economical power, industry is enabled to realize
the advantages of better and cheaper living conditions
for workers, and in many cases closer proximity to raw-
materials and markets.
Development of the local demand immediately avail-
able—the grist mill, grain elevator, waterworks system
street lighting—justifies the initial investment by the
utility company which thereafter cooperates with the
community in building up local industries and attract-
ing new ones.
In this kind of healthy development, apparent thru-
out America, the West Texas Utilities Company is one
of the most active participants.
