Youths show several champions
By Donna Harranger
Mandy Ford, Russell
Holland and Kevin Hill
brought home top plac
ings for their steers in the
Wichita Falls J unior Beef
Show sponsored by the
Jaycees and held Febru
ary 13 15.
Eighth grader Mandy
Ford s steer, bred by
W.R. Hager of Haskell,
was judged first place in
("lass Six of the Other
Breeds Division (which in
eluded all Crossbreeds),
and then won Reserve
Crossbred Champion hon
ors. At the judging of the
top winners in each divi
sion, the steer was named
Reserve Grand Champion
of the Show.
Her steer was pur
chased by Safeway
Stores, and sold for
$3,600.
"Mandy received a rec
ord sale price for a steer
at the Wichita Falls
Show," said Lawrence
Winkler, 4 H sponsor,
who explained that sale
prices for steers shown at
the show had gone for
much lower prices in the
past.
Mandy has been partici
pating in 4 H stock shows
for the past four years,
City council
and has another steer to
be shown at the Shackel
ford County Stock Show,
scheduled for March 9 and
10.
In the Angus Division.
Russell Holland's steer
took first place in the hea
vy weight class, and then
was judged Champion An
gus.
Kevin Hill's steer took
first place in Class Two of
the heavyweight judging,
and then won Reserve
Champion Angus. The
steer was bred by Waller
Cattle Company of Alba
ny, and sold for $1.00 per
(Cont. from pg. 1)
currently under construe
tion.
The zoning board would
either approve or deny
construction of building
within a certain radius of
the airport.
Airport Committee
Chairman Ed Tackett
stated that the require
ments are very
reasonable and shouldn't
keep anyone from build
ing any type of structure.
The only strict stipulation
concerns height limita
tions on the north and
south approaches to the
airport.
In the motion to adopt
the ordinance was includ
ed the appointment of the
city's two representatives
on the board. K.C. Jones
and Colton Johnson were
chosen as the city's two
representatives.
The county will have to
adopt the same ordinance
and appoint two
members.
Todd reported that the
city is currently using
water from Lake Hub
bard because of the
unacceptable quality of
the water at the present
time in Lake McCarty.
"Over 10 feet of water
was added to Lake Mc
Carty in just three weeks
last fall and it really
stirred up the lake. Right
now the water won't pass
state standards, but it
should settle out and be
usable in a short period of
time."
The council also talked
about the poor condition
of several of the water
mains in town. Todd rec
ommended that a profes
sional water study be con
ducted to determine
where the problem areas
are. The West Central
Texas Municipal Water
District would probably
pay for one half of the stu
dy, according to Todd.
"I don't know enough
about water engineering
to tell what needs to be
done. If we have an engin
eering study done it will
show where the problems
are and how long we have
before they have to be fix
ed."
Bartee suggested that
the council include $5,000
in the water department's
portion of the new budget
to cover the expense of
such a study.
On a motion by Bartee
the council went into clos
ed session to discuss per
sonnel matters.
Upon reopening the
meeting to the public ap
proximately one hour
later no action was taken
concerning personnel.
