Holiday shopping in The Colony surges
Sales, traffic above last year's figures
By Amy Sorter
According to marketing and re-
tail analysts, holiday spending nation-
wide will increase by 3 percent this
year over spending in 1996. Econo-
mists believe that a strong economy
combined with low unemployment
will equal consumer confidence - and
presumably more money forked over
at cash registers for Christmas, Ha-
nukkah and Kwanza gifts.
Merchants in The Colony who
handle gifts and goods agree with the
statistics - holiday sales are definitely
up.
Although immediate post-
Thanksgiving sales were somewhat
slow at Gifts and Cards Unique!,
owner Delaina Hammock said she has
served a steady stream of people since
early December and believes she will
see even more customers through
Christmas eve.
"I've heard people tell me that
they're starting their Christmas shop-
ping late," she said. "And people are
still buying box cards."
People are shopping later this
year, she believes, because of several
days of unseasonably warm weather
in North Texas. "I find that when it's
sunny and gorgeous, people don't
want to do Christmas shopping," she
said. "We see a sales decrease. When
it gets cold, we have better days."
Scott Killian, who is store man-
ager of Beall's Department Store also
attributes customers - or lack thereof
- to the weather. Cold and rainy days,
he said, have tended to keep people
at home. Despite that, he has seen an
overall increase in his current sales
over those last year. His post-Thanks-
giving weekend, he noted, was par-
ticularly strong. "I had a 56 percent
gain that weekend over the same
weekend last year," he said. "I'd say
that's an improvement." The reason?
"I'm thinking that people weren't
wanting to get out and fight mall traf-
fic that day," Killian said.
Sandy Hill, who owns The Colony
Florist, has also seen a slight gain in
sales, compared to sales from last
year. She is, however, uncertain as to
whether the increase is because of in-
creased consumer confidence or the
fact that her competitor, Mr. C's Flo-
rist, has closed temporarily for relo-
cation.
Hill did say that customers this
year are, on average, spending more
money per purchase than they had in
the past. She cited an example of one
customer who wanted to add some-
thing to an arrangement she had al-
ready bought. "I told her it would cost
extra, and she didn't mind paying it,"
Hill said.
Hammock has noticed the same
trend of people paying more. "I think
people are buying more selectively,"
she said. "They don't mind paying
more for something that's nice and
unique."
While local merchants have no-
ticed more sales, Maurice Booth of
Mail 'n' More has seen an increase in
shipping as well. Booth, who owns
the mail center, indicated this is a busy
time of year for him. He added, how
ever, that he has shipped 42 percent
more packages during the first nine

days of December 1997 than he did
during the same period last year.
"I think people have gotten started
shopping and shipping earlier than
normal this year," he said in explana-
tion. "Last year, Thanksgiving was a
week late and it threw a lot of
people." But this year, in the same
situation, he said, people became
more savvy.
In addition to shipping packages
Booth and his staff try to advise cus-
tomers about how much time is re-
maining to ship packages via United,
Parcel Service (UPS). With the shop-
ping days to Christmas dwindling to
a handful, the time for complacency
and last-minute deliveries are almost
over, Booth said.
"Anything not shipped by Dec. 17
will risk not getting to its destination
by Christmas if it's shipped via UPS
ground," Booth said. "But there are
still ways to get a package to where
it needs to go by using express and
overnight shipping services."
