elimination tournament among s
group of challengere.
This writer is s firm believer In
the pugiliatie philosophy advanced by
the rejected snd suthorltatire su-
thor of Ring msKatine, Nnt Fleiacher,
that boxing titles ahould he won or
lout in the ring. I can therefore en-
dorse only s few rare circumstances
when e tournnment to crown s cham-
pion to replace the actual champion
by conquest, would lie justifiable.
These circumstances would involve
the death of a champion outside the
ring, leaving the title vacunt; the
incarceration of the titlist for sn ex-
tended period for law-breaking or
illness, or, in the only legitimate caae
relsting to actusl boxing perform-
ance, if a champion consistently re-
fuses to fight the bona-flde top chal-
lenger or challengers. In the latter
caw. thone selected to pnrti< ijmV
in the elimination tournament ahould
be chosen with the utmost care, tak-
ing into full accouut their records and
capabilities.
In the esse of the WHA's impru-
dent art of divesting CMay of the
title for signing for the Nov. 10 title
remateh with List on, none of these
extenuating circumstances existed. The
WBA must therefore be considered
as hsving acted srbitrarlly against
' The Lip,'* snd Liston. The WBA, is
disenchanted with Clay and Iuston
because, belatedly. It haa turned sour
title rematches, to begin with;
because it did not—like moet of us—

like the circumstances
pugilists' first bout
and further, because of Bonny'
nancial stake in its promotion. Bosny
now swears, however, thst he has re-
lievsd himself of the controlling shsre
in Internstionsl Promotions, incor-
porated.
He that ss it may, neither of the
arguments sdvsnced by te WBA to
sufficient to justify lifting Clay's ti-
tle. Clsy won his title In the ring—
not on paper—and except for the
three reasons listed sbove, he should
be given s chance to retain or loss it
there.
ltesides, ' v bypassing Clay snd
Liston, tli \Y1!A, despite its spon-
sored tournament, would not be, in
fact, crowning a bom-fide champion,
because of the questionable chnmpion
calibre of the selected challengers.
Who are the t«>p chnllengers, sny-
way? They include Floyd Patterson,
who was twice flsttcned by Listen,
each time without Sonny even wow-
ing tip a good sweat ; Zora Folley, slso
one of liston's victims; rugged Dong
Jones, one of the best of the lot, but
who is likewise n Clay victim; EdUi
Machen, whose retreat from battle
did not prevent Liston from deci-
sioning hiiu, snd who, in turn, lost
to Patterson recently; snd, young
Hrnest Terrell.
Terrell is the only man in the
group i»f those who would psrticipste
in the tournament who hasn't lost to
either Clay or Liston. Rut this scribe
believes TVrrell is not ex|»erienced
enough to merit championship hon-
ors, should he emerge the winner of
the tournament. 1 believe he is no
inateh for either Clay, liston, or
even Patterson.
From the slwve evaluation. It
shouldn't take a lloudinl to discern
that a heavyweight champion, crown-
ed in such s tournament, would be
at best a paper champion.
Furthermore, boxing fans largely
have not supported the WBA's deci-
sion to dive* Clay
