Mesquiters Tackle Lions Tonight
McCombs Runs 80
Yards To Give
Mesquite Victory
BY CARL NIENDORFF
With all the thrills and chills of
a Friday the Thirteenth mystery
novel, the Mesquite High School
Football Teams came out on the
big end of a 12 to 6 score in their
season opener with the Forney
Jackrabbits last Friday night.
Except for a perfectly executed
opening play the Mesquiters were
roundly outplayed by the visitors
from Forney throughout the entire
game. The Jackrabbits threatened to
score several times but failed to
tally because of fumbles or penalties.
Big Johnny Layden assisted b v
Boone and Hawks sparked the For-
ney Backfield while Weant. Adams
and Roland stood out in the line.
Handicapped both by lack of vet-
erans and a short training period,
the Mesquiters were a bit rusty on
the defense which accounted for the
strong offense put out by the Rab-
bits. Both Mesquite touchdowns
came after cross country sprints. Lit-
tle Dan Royal, first string quarter-
back, started the fireworks at the
very opening of the game when he
trotted sixty one yards to pay dirt
on* the first play attempted by the
Mesquiters.
Don McCombs. understudy for
Dan Royal, made his bid for honors
by returning a fourth down put
some eighty one yards for the final
Mesquite tally. Forney made their
only score on a pass from Hawks
to Weant early in the third quarter.
Forney started the game by kick-
ing off to Mesquite. Laydens kick
was received by E. J. Jones on the
Mesquite 20 and returned 15 yards
to the 36. On the first play of the
game, Dan Royal cut over the right
side of the line and behind beauti-
ful interference ran 65 yards for the
first score of the game. The try for
extra point was no good and the
score remained 6-0 in favor of Mes-
quite.
Arthur Dean's kick off was re-
ceived by Boone on his own 15 yard
line and returned to the Forney 40
before being tackled. On their first
play, Forney fumbled and lost 12
yards. Failing to make the necessary
yardage on the next two plays the
Jackrabbits punted on fourth down.
Otis Bell broke through and blocked
the punt and Mesquite recovered on
i the Forney 20. On the first play
Norwood picked up 3 yands. On the
next play Dan Royal's pass was in-
' tercepted by Hawks for Forney who
J returned the ball to the Forney 28
| yard line where he was brought
i down by Captain Joe Whltehurst.
; Mixing a ground attack with passes
: the Jackrabbits advanced the ball
from their own 28 to the Mesquite
21 where E. J. Jones cut short their
j touchdown march by intercepting
i Hawks pass Starting play on their
; own 21 the Mesquiters lost 5 yards
on an off side penalty and punted
on fourth down. Again the Jackrab-
bits were stopped with another pass
interception. This time Edwin Aus-
tin doing the ball snagging. The
whistle sounded ending the first
1 quarter before any more damage
could be done.
No scoring was done during the
second quarter, with the Forney
Jackrabbits doing most of the of-
j fensive playing while the Mesquiters
stuck to the defense.
Mesquite began the second half by
kicking off to Forney. Dean's kick
, was taken in by Layden on his own
! 22 and returned to the Forney 33
where he was brought down by Aus-
tin. Starting play on the 33 yard
line the Jackrabits worked the ball
to the Mesquite 11 yard line where
Hawks passed to Weant for the first
Forney touchdown. The try for ex-
tra point was unsuccessful tying
the score 6 and 6. The remainder of
the third quarter and the first of the
fourth quarter again saw the Jack-
rabbits threaten to score only to
be repulsed by a stubborn Mesquite
defense. Late in the fourth quarter
a fourth down punt by Layden was
received by substitute quarterback
Donald McCombs on the Mesquite 19 |
yard line. Sidestepping, weaving and
cut backs with the help of an inter- j
ference led by Captain Joe White-
hurst. McCombs raced 81 yards to j
untie the game and ice away a
victory for the Mesquiters. The
final score 12 to 6.

Over l-Fourth State
Leased For Oil
More than one-fourth of Texas is
now under lease for oil and gas de-
velopment, a statewide survey just
completed by the Texas Mid-Con-
tinent Oil and Gas Association
shows.
Out of a total area of 169,130,-
716 acres in Texas, Texas oilmen
have under lease 45,402.656 acres,
the association found. This is nearly
27 per cent of all the land in Texas.
The figures were compiled from
county tax records, company reports
and ownership maps of individual
counties.
Least* and royalty payments on
this acreage to Texas farmers and
ranchers totalled over $126,000,000
in 1939, the association reported.
This extra cash income for Texas
farmers and stockmen represented
an additional 27 cents from the oil-
man for each dollar of cash farm
income, exclusive of Government
benefit payments. Including such
payments, it represented 22 cents |
additional for each dollar of cash
agricultural income in Texas last,
year.
In total return to the State, how-
ever, petroleum far exceeded all
agricultural products. Expenditures
of the oil and gas industry in Texas
in 1939 were approximately $750,-
000.000, or nearly $200,000,000
more than the $567,596,000 Texas
farm and ranch income from all
crops, livestock and Government
benefits. Well over one-third of pet-
roleum's total expenditures go to
Texas workers who receive $272.-
000.000 a year in wages and salar-
ies.
All but three counties out of the
State's 254 now have acreage leased ,
for oil and gas exploration or pro- 1
duction. The exceptions are Rock-
wall. Mason and Llano.

team handed the Mesquiters in the
second contest last year. Neither
team minded one loss as long as
they had one victory to their credit,
but neither team intends to lose the
third and deciding contest. Conse-
quentty both teams have squared off
In their corners preparing to slug it
out to the bitter end at the sound
of the bell, or perhaps we should say
whistle.
Last week wo stated, along with
other fans, that lady luck would
choose the Mesquiters In their Friday
the Thirteenth encounter with the
Jackrabbits. We were certainly cor-
rect, for nothing but good luck
could have accounted for the Mes-
qnite victory as the stastistics will
prove, for the Mesquiters were
roundly outplayed by the Jackrab-
bits in every department. Anyway
we'll string along with the Maroon
Men to take the game away from
Kaufman, both from the good luck
angle and because Coaches Sikes and
Anderson have Ironed out most of
the rough spots that stood out so
vividly In last weeks game.
This will be the first game of
the season for Kaufman, and the
Mesquiters should be able to do con-
siderable damage early in the same
while the Lions are recovering from
their opening game nervousness.
Only six lettermen compose the
nucleus of veterans for the Black
and C/oId squad. Except for big 201
pound Lambeth at tackle, the
Lions have reputedly one of the
lightest teams in the schools his-
tory, as well as the least experienc-
ed. The Kaufman attack will be
built around Van Hall, accurate
passer and Monday rangy pass snas-
glng end: and big T. Oraham, pow-
erful 170 pound line smashing ball
carrier.
