HOUSTON, TEXAS, JULY 18,
Fire Department Needs Men
The volunteer lire departments of our three cities stre
the taxpayers many thousands vf dollars every year. While
the men enjoy the drills and the good fellowship that the
association with other men brings, they are motivated pri-
marily in giving their time to the department by the knowl-
edge that they are performing a worthwhile civic service.
All three departments tould use some additional volun-
teers. Particularly valuable as members are men who work
nearby and are available for answering day time calls. But
men who work downtown should not let that stop them from
applying as they are needed for night calls and all drills are
held in the evening.
So, if you want to do a good turn for your city and at
the same time get some fine exercise at the weekly drills
and enjoy the companionship of a bunch of sweH fellows, see
any member of your fire department about "joining up."
Don't Wait For The Fire Engine
And speaking <>f fire departments brings up the subject
of cancer, unrelated an it may seem. Eventually there will
be an absolute cure for this dread disease. Perhaps there
may be a medication that even will prevent cancer. Trag-
ically enough, this is probably years away.
You can't afford to wait until science finds the answer.
There are many things you can do now to help prevent
cancer. You can be alert and watchful for yourself and
your family and insist on thorough medical examinations at
least once a year.
Many thousands die of cancer every year who could have
been saved, had they acted soon enough. Surgery, x-ray
and radium are successfully used in treating cancer. As
many an 90 per cent of some types of cancer can be cured
in the early stages.
With present knowledge alone most cancer can be cured
if diagnosed soon enough.
If you had a pail of water handy, when your house
caught fire, you would throw it on the flames. You wouldn't
wait for the fire engine!
Don't just sit and wait and hope that a cancer cure will
be found. Be on your guard and prompt medical action can
keep the scourge of cancer from increasing its toll.
