Workers lay down squares of grass at the Newport Beach and Golf
course on State Hwy. 361 on Monday, Nov. 20. The 18-hole Arnold
Palmer links-style course is expected to occupy more than 200 acres
of land on both sides of the highway just south of Beach Access
Road 1A. The first three holes of the course will lie on 47 acres of
land on the bay side of State Hwy. 361. The remaining 15 holes will
stretch along 190 acres on the beach side of the highway, with some
of the fairways winding amid dunes.
Amateur writers have until Thurs-
day, Nov. 30, to turn in entries to the
third annual Texas Laughing Gull
Writing Contest.
Corpus Christi Caller-Times jour-
nalists will be judges of the contest
sponsored by the Art Center for the
Islands.
Libby Averyt, editor and vice
president of the Caller-Times, will
be judge of the non-fiction category.
Sarah Booher, copy editor and de-
signer, will judge fiction. Assistant
City Editor Beth Francesco will
judge poetry.
In each category, first prize will be
$100; second prize will be $50; and
third will be $25.
Submissions must follow con-
test guidelines. Folks may obtain
guidelines by sending e-mails to
txlaughinggull @ hotmajl, com or by
calling the art center at 749-7334 or
by going to the art center's Web site,
www.portaransasartcenter.org.

registration
beginning
Decorators, dust off your thinking
caps.
It's time to decorate trees that de-
pict the theme of the 2006 Holiday
Forest, Once Upon a Time.
The Holiday Forest is sponsored by
the Port Aransas Parks and Recreation
Department.
Civic, youth, church or family
groups, or businesses are invited to
decorate trees for the forest. Call 749-
4158 by Dec. 17 to register.
Trees will be set up from 1 to 5
p.m. Sunday, Dec. 17, at the Civic
Center.
Judging will be held Monday, Dec.
18. Three prizes will be awarded.
Best of Show will earn the decorators
$100, and two Judge's Awards worth
$50 each will be awarded. Prizes will
be presented Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the
Civic Center during the Decorators'
Potluck Dinner Party from 6 to 8
p.m.
"Bring a dinner dish, enjoy some
holiday music and fellowship and find
out the judges' decisions for the best
trees of the year," said Rachael King,
assistant director of the Port Aransas
Parks and Recreation Department.
Trees depicting the theme will be
on display at the Civic Center, 710
W. Ave. A, from Dec. 18-22. Admis-
sion is free.
Trees must be removed from the
Civic Center on Tuesday, Dec. 26.
