varsity players lost all four of their
games in the Marlin Classic held Nov.
16-18. Yet, Coach Mark Spencer was
feeling good about his team by the
end of the tournament.
Immediately after the Marlins lost
their third game in the tournament,
Spencer had a talk with the boys in
the locker room.
"I said we've got ability," Spencer

recalled later. "We just hadn't been
playing with heart."
The Marlins went on to also lose
their next game - the final game of
the tournament. Tilden won, 38-26.
But the Marlins played that game
with drive and emotion.
"I was happier with that loss than
our win last Tuesday (Nov. 14, versus
Highland Christian), because we
played with heart," Spencer said.
The Marlins started the tournament
with a 36-56 loss to the Poolville
Lions. While Poolville is similar to
Port Aransas in school size, the Lions
dominated the Marlins.
But Poolville was champion of its
district last year and is favored to win
it again this year.
Next was Incarnate Word Acade-
my. The Marlins lost, 63-36. A bright
spot: The Marlins held IWA to only
six points in the third quarter.
"What upsets me is, we could have
done that the whole game," Spencer
said. "It shows me how we can play
against a very good team ... and we
didn't."
Next, the Marlins lost to Saint
Anthony Catholic School, a large San
Antonio school, 67-31.
"We played tired," Spencer said.
"It was our third game in 24 hours,
and we played like it."
Finally, there was the Tilden game,
which brought the Marlins some
hope for future games, despite losing
38-26. The Marlins played with fire
after Spencer's locker room speech.
"Definitely, they stepped up a lot,"
Spencer said. "... I felt we grew as
a team. Our team chemistry was a
lot better."
