Port Aransas South Jetty
Cross your fingers
Waiting list is forming now for sold out cruise and mini-taste
The Champagne Cruise and Mini-
Taste of Port Aransas is sold out, and
a waiting list is forming.
The event will be Friday, Sept. 8,
aboard the Scat Cat out of Fisherman's
Wharf.
Staff members at the Port Aransas
Chamber of Commerce-Tourist Bu-
reau are taking names of anyone who
would like to buy tickets that cannot
be used by the original buyers. Ticket
holders who cannot use their tickets
may call the chamber at 749-5919,
to be put in touch with people on the
waiting list.
Tickets sold for $35 each.
The evening of dining, dancing and
cruising includes sampling island cui-
sine from virtually all of the restaurants
in Port Aransas. Cruisers also may
enjoy refreshments including wine,
beer and champagne. Dancing under
the stars will be to music provided
by the duet of Eddie Olivarez Jr. on
the saxophone and Vince Ginova on
keyboard.
This annual event, for which tickets
are tax deductible, is unique in that 100
percent of all services, food and drink
are donated by the community and 100
percent of the proceeds are returned to
the community by the Rotary Club,
event sponsor. Profits from the cruise
benefit projects directed toward the
youth of Port Aransas.
This cruise again is dedicated to the
memory of Barbara Sheppard, one of
its founders, former owner of Fisher-
man's Wharf and long-time member
of the Port Aransas Rotary Club.
For further information contact Ann
Bracher Vaughan, executive direc-
tor of the Port Aransas Chamber of
Commerce and Rotary Club treasurer
at 749-5919.

Outbound offshore

The offshore oil rig Deepwater Nautilus dwarfs a pair of anglers in a small boat (as well as its own -'j'
tugboats) as it's towed between the jetties at Port Aransas en route back to sea on Thursday, Aug. 17.
The rig had been at Kiewit Marine in Ingleside for several weeks for maintenance.
City-owned land in Charlie's Pasture
to be under microscope at workshop
The city council and the Planning
and Zoning Commission will focus
on a 67-acre tract of land the city
owns on the Corpus Christi Ship
Channel on Thursday, Sept. 14,
when they meet in a workshop.
The tract became an item of
contention two years ago when the
city invited bids to develop it and
developer Ralph Durden proposed
a marina and condominium-hotel-
retail complex for the area.
That proposal failed in the face of
massive opposition, but only after
Durden had scaled down his project
several times in presentations to the
council.
Since then, several city council
members have said the city must
decide what to do with the land. A
permit for a marina on the property
was recently re-approved by the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers. Last year,
during a council goals workshop,
city Councilman Mike Hall asked,
"If we decide not to do anything with
it, should we turn it into a resource
that we can use somewhere else?"
Councilman Bubba Jensen noted
that the proposal included an alter-
nate ferry landing and a road leading
to it from State Hwy. 361.
"Whether people would accept a
landing there or not, that road gives
access to both that acreage and
the (city nature preserve)," Jensen
said.
(The road, part of Durden's pro-
posal, was never approved.)
Then-councilman Mark Grosse
consistently opposed developing
any property beyond the borders
of the tract because, he said, prop-
erty had been condemned by the
city for recreational use, and the
so-called Charlie's Harbor project
sms
$u?f
didn't fall under that umbrella.
The workshop will be open to the
public but is not a public hearing and
no public speeches are expected to
be allowed. Because the matter is
not expected to be an action item on
the council's agenda, no action can
come from the workshop.

Participants should wear appro-
priate beach shoes, hats and sun-
screen, and bring a receptacle for the
