CATCH COLUMBUS CITY TOUR
NORTHWEST CHAPTER
The Northwest Chapter was held in Hood River, Oregon, on
May 2nd and 3rd. There were several cancellations due to
members being in poor health or on the road to recovery. John
Sathrun is out of the hospital and doing good. The doctors felt
it would be better if Herman Christianson and Louis Fitzwater
stayed home this year but we hope to see them next year.
The Hood River Inn did their best to show us a good time.
The food and service was very good. Our Hellkittens really put
up a spread of fine food for our Saturday lunch. We thank each
and everyone for that.
Frank Gallagher and Cindy Shanks won the top prizes from
the drawing Saturday night. Frank took the handmade
Afghan made by Bernie Curry and Cindy won the wooden
soldier handmade by Cliff Hunter.

Yvoune Ferguson, Glenn and Opal White, Charles and Anne

When we think of the 4th of July, we usually think only of
the writing and signing of the Declaration of Independence.
But what led up to that event?
When Hellcats think of their time in Western Europe, do
they think only of their combat months in France and Ger-
many (and Austria)? What about training and earlier prepa-
ration?
This season of the birth of our nation seems suited to a
timely "rehash" of the patriotism that has sustained each
veteran whenever he has been called and his shoulders have
been tapped to help create and maintain this great land of
ours.
Just as the Minutemen were called to stand at Lexington
(12:30 a.m., April 19, 1775) and at Concord (2:00 a.m., April 19,
1775), the Hellcats of the 12th AD answered their call with no
reservations. And at 2:30 a.m., April 19, 1775, when Paul
Revere warned John Hancock and Samuel Adams to leave
Lincoln MA before the British troops' arrival, consider where
they might have been on July 4, 1776 had they not departed in
order to be able to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Everyone is needed to do his part.
The vast majority of Hellcats never knew the big, overall
plan of battle, but they were ready to follow the orders of their
superiors without question in order to reach the big objective.
On our country's 221st birthday, it is appropriate to salute the
noble men of the 12th AD, one of the important links in the
chain that has continued to guarantee freedom to all U.S.
citizens.
On this 4th of July 1997, may God bless America and all
Hellcats who were ready to give their all to preserve the rights
and freedom for all Americans, and especially, those who did
give their all.
