changes to the HELLCAT NEWS, 1913 Paul 111 a n0te fr0m Houston, TX
Jerome Drive, Godfrey, IL 62035. writes that it was a great reunion in
Denver and Bill and Millie McCar-
try (Div Trs) were there for their
first reunion. Paul and Bill were the
only representation from Division
Trains and had a wonderful visit
and great time as they had not seen
each other since 1945. Bill and
Millie are looking forward to Or-
lando next year and also hope to
make the Easter Chapter meet-
ing in the Spring.
Ed writing from his home in
Riverside California sends along a
lengthy and newsy letter. He re-
ports that he and wife Mickey are
OK and recovering from the Den-
ver trip where there was a good
turn out for the reunion. He had a
good time visiting with many of the
Division Headquarters gang and
Quips Those guys got so old. Not
ME. Just them." Noting among
others, were Chaplain Bisgaard
(Div Hq/CCA) whom Ed chated
with about their service in the U.S.
Army Reserves. He reminded the
Chaplain that he had put in a total
of over 37 years of active and re-
serve duty combined and retired in
1982 as a Chief Warrant Officer.
Chaplain Bisgaard, in turn remind-
ed Ed that he retired in 1983 as a
Brigadier General. Ed also enjoyed
visits with Dr. Brendan Phibbs (Div
Hq/CCA) who is a Cardiologist
and also teaches at the medical
school of the University of
Wyoming at Jackson; Marlin Pulst
(Div Hq) who is back in North
Dakota raising wheat and Idus
Cleveland (17th AIB), a former
member of the old Division Ser-
vice Co. whom he hadn't seen since
1944. Ed further adds that he is
still working two days a week as a
volunteer service officer for the
Jewish War Veterans of the USA
at the VA hospital in Loma Linda,
Calif, located near San Bernardino.
Recently he had an encounter with
a person whom he learned was in
the German navy and was seeking
VA assistance. The recepionist
knowing that a German service
man coming face-to-face with a
Bernstein would go over like a lead
balloon, turned him over to Ed,
who in turn gave him the "Bern-
stein Shuffle" out the front door
after the interview and told him to
try the county hospital. Ed and
Mickey are making plans to go on
the move again and will pay a
return visit to the "land-down-
under" - Australia the latter part
of '85. He's been invited by the
Australian Intelligence Corps
Assn. once again. They previously
visited there in '79. They are also
planning to catch the Orlando
reunion and also visit relatives
near-by. Mickey is still working for
Mervyn's Dept. Stores in River-
side. She heads the inventory
control department and is also
contemplating retirement.
From Shreveport, La. comes
dues and a bit of news from Lee
Snow (Div Hq) informing us that
he retired as of 31 Aug 84 as an
area audit manager with the
Louisiana Department of Revenue
after 34 Vz years of service. He
continues ... It was time for me to
leave. Maybe retirement isn't ex-
actly descriptive as I have taken
another job as a tax auditor on the
5th of September. My health has
been very good so far and I want
to work for three more years at
which time I will be 65. I'm looking
forward to working in private
industry. Sue and I have two
daughters and a son. The oldest
child, a daughter, lives in Houston
and has three girls. The oldest is
17. Our son and other daughter
live in Shreveport. She has a 2
year old daughter.
In a note written to Norb
Bruemmer and forwarded to me
comes from Bob Rupert (Hq/119
Eng). It was Bob who notified the
association of the death of Karl
Snyder (Div Hq) after receiving
word from Karl's wife, Jeanette.
Writing from Adrian, Pa., he
further adds that Karl had had
problems for several years and he
and Jeanette could not make the
latter reunions due to this. Karl
had been associated with Sara
Conventry Jewelry before his
retirement. Ruby and I were sorry
that we were unable to attend the
Denver reunion as I was having
health problems at the time. I just
had surgery on my knee and not
very navigable. Bob closes with ...
Keep up the good work that you
are doing as executive secretary
and editor of the HCN.
One of my old Division Head-
quarters side-kicks, Clarence
Whitefield (Div Hq/AG) renews
membership and includes a short
note. Whitey, writing from Chapel
Hill, NC tells us that he retired on
May 1st as Special Asst. to Vice
Chancellor of University Relations
at his alma mater, the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
He continues ... My wife Jane and
I hosted my UNC class of '44 at our
40th reunion in mid May then went
on a Friendship Force trip to
Poland, which was quite interest-
ing. We also visited Austria and
Munich. We've spent a lot of time
this summer at the beach and now
I am back at work at the UNC as a
development officer.
