HELLCAT NEWS
August 1998
came to the conclusion those with these capabilities should forward
their news to the unit rep using these methods. Not everyone has
these accesses, but many do. Bob and oF Comp say they should
make sure they have the unit rep's e-address and use it. (I'll second
that, Ken. At present I have six 494th e-addresses four from the
division, ten in all, and it is great.)
It won't be long before the big bash in Houston, so be sure you
make your hotel reservations and also your 494th Battalion dinner
reservations. While you're at it, volunteer to help out with the
hospitality room. Ruth and I won't make the reunion but the health
is steadily improving, so maybe next year.
Rubye Glover has had extensive surgery on her tongue which has
left her under the weather. She is a fighter so is coming along nicely
however slowly. Drop her a note and a card.
Until next month, may God bless you all each day in every way.
Remember to get your reservations for Houston in now! So far
the 494th is almost a no-show with only four, Glovers and Millers
having reservations. Get yours in now!

This is your penultimate chance to sign up for our unit dinner at
Houston. This annual gathering is a fun time for the 495 to be
together. Don't miss it.
Had a pleasant phone call from Anthony Stampone [SV] who
reports all is well with Hanna and himself. They still travel fre-
quently and enjoy seeing new places. They meet with family in
Palm Coast, FL. Anthony still owns a home in Bay Ridge,
Brooklyn, his childhood locale. Wants to sell it. Any buyers,
contact Anthony. I'm returning some unused war years photos to
Anthony. There were no captions or identities of the persons in the
photos. I always enjoy getting your pix, but you must identify the
subjects and location in order to put in the HCN.
Congratulations to John and Elsie Minor [HQ] on their 50th
wedding anniversary in March. Their children organized a reception
for them. A son-in-law composed lyrics to music from "Les Miz"
which featured highlights of their 50 years. Elsie and John both
grew up in Brooklyn, so their present was a trip to New York
revisiting familiar sights including Tavern on the Green and Statue
of Liberty. John says you can take the man out of Brooklyn, but you
can't take Brooklyn out of the man. He tried calling me twice,
unsuccessfully. I'm real sorry to have missed you, John.
I should add that the Minors live in Cincinnati and attended the
memorial service on June 8 for Jane Seitz. I received a letter from
Clint, thanking all the 495 for their support in this trying time for
him. There were over 300 at the Memorial service, an overflow
number which required folding chairs in the pew area. Eulogies
were given by the Minister and Clint's youngest son. Clint was
supported by his large and visibly loving family. Also attending
were five or six men from the 12th. Clint and Jane have three
daughters, two sons and eight grandchildren. For those of you
wishing to do so, memorials may be made to Westwood 1st Presby-
terian Church "Celebration Fund", 3011 Harrison Ave., Cincinnati,
OH 45211.
Harlan Helgeson [A] saddened to hear of the death of Wade
Shulse [A]. Made him recall that Wade and he, along with Lou De
Mauro, Lou Ostratt, Joe Mielnik and Dave Sloop, were first recruits
of A Btry in Camp Campbell. Harlan and Wade were often paired
in Basic Training, and Wade would throw the 130 pound Harlan
over his shoulder and walk off with him. Over the years they
exchanged lengthy yule letters and phone calls, right thru last year.
He will miss his old buddy. Harlan sent a condolence card to
Marylee Shulse, who he never met. Harlan also reports he had a
heart check-up which was o.k. However the doc found a clog in his
carotid artery, requiring surgery. All looks o.k. now. Thanks,
Harlan, for your booster contribution.
Tom and Bernice White [A] went to Ken Bradstreet's annual
Hellcat picnic in Emporia, KS. Dr. Williams of ACU was there and
talked about the Abilene Historic Project. Now Tom has a brick
with his name on it for the Hellcat museum floor. The Whites have
friends whose daughter is a naval officer stationed in Puerto Rico.
Want to know more from me about the island. Will send them a
more detailed report at a future date. The Whites have a busy
summer schedule with their family. Sounds like a fun time.
Looks like Mary Shatto is planning to go to Houston. She's
changed her address. See new locale somewhere in HCN.

Well fellow Hellcats, here it is August, and we, the Goldens, are
looking forward to the next six weeks with keen anticipation! To
start, our son Todd and his family will be with us for the best part
of a week, we're going to show our daughter-in-law Laurie and the
grandchildren around some of the Empire state. Perhaps Lake
George, Howe's Cavern, only about 35 miles west of here, Ausable
Chasm, 90 miles north, Niagara Falls 300 miles west might be a bit
too far but we've planned several places in this wonderful state and
will leave it up to Todd and Laurie to decide just what they want to
do with the few days we will share in early August.
Then, on the 28th, we, Zelda (Jo to her many Hellcat friends) and
I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary! Yes! Fifty years with
the same woman!! As I look back over the past half century or
more, I think of so many times and places which have made our
lives so memorable. Of course the kids, our children, and now the
grandchildren, have been the most important and rewarding part of
all this. I think of so many places where we have gone together and
met with members of our Hellcat family. I'm going to try to touch
on a few of them with the realization I will miss more than I have
time or space to mention!
I attended the first stateside reunion of our Association at the
Commodore Hotel in New York City in 1947. Our grand banquet
was held in the Ballroom of the old Aster Hotel. I remember, just
like it was last week, sitting with Henry Ulissi at a table and
reminiscing about our experiences in the 714th. Among those
present, Fred Field, our Bn Co., and Harold Landau, still in a
wheelchair due to wounds of combat. I know Ira Yates remembers
the day our Company Executive Officer was hit!
Then I met Zelda in May of 1948 and it was love at first sight!
For me at least, it took her a few minutes to realize this was the
beginning of a romance which would last down through the years.
Hellcat Reunions have been an important part of our lives since that
day so long ago! Places like Philadelphia, Detroit, Louisville at least
three times, Cleveland, three also, (who could forget the ??Stanley
Hotel where I first became acquainted with the Grimshaws, Eileen
and George, HQ Unit), Myrtle Beach, 1970, where I was elected
President (Billy Lucas must remember the bash on the rooftop) and
Milwaukee, 1971, where I was replaced by Al Lipschultz. Long
