HELLCAT NEWS
March 1982
excerpts are from Christmas
Cards Bob received...
Sarah and Walter Harden
reported all is well and looking
forward to some traveling for the
holidays. We should have more
people like Sarah...she is a true
newspaper fan.
Olga and Fred Stillman are
already looking forward to the
Eastern Chapter Reunion. Hope
Fred remembers to bring his suit-
case to this one.
And, of course, Art and Inez
Naimy sent a well prepared news
letter covering the entire year's
association events and Naimy
family news. The Naimy's lead
busy lives. Hope they remember
that all roads lead to St. Louis in
1982.
Fred Erichsen's card contained
a note why we had not gotten
together for dinner with the
Croker's in November...seems
they spent too much time in
Texas and want to pick up the
dinner option at a later time.
Since Fred will be in Florida for
the winter months, guess we'll
table the date for a while.
A card from the sunny south
was from Dave and Bea Ross.
This card with a return address in
Florida, also contained an invita-
tion that sounds almost irresist-
ible—golf, swimming, Sea World,
Disney World, etc. From the looks
of what the Ross family is seeing
in the South, it sure seems that if
you are to he promoted and trans-
ferred, Florida is a good spot to
pick.
Thanks Robert, you did it
again.
Thanks Robert, you did it
That's it folks, take care, be
good and God Bless. Remember
your buddies and write.

Mildred Swicegood—HQ
Well I am on the road again and
having left Carthage, NY a week
later than we had planned
because I got sick with a touch of
the Flu so left on Jan. 16th and
visited our children on the way to
the Big Apple and an overdue
visit with a Buddy, Julius Zuck-
er—A Co. for three days and we
sure had a wonderful time chew-
ing the old fat and enjoying each
others company along with our
wives. While there we had chats
with Lester Stricoff and the Ex-
Exec. George Moss both of A Co.
Headed for the warmer climates
when ice and snow were forecast
for the East Coast. Went to
Augusta, Ga to visit my brother-
in-law an Ex-paratrooper from the
11th Airborne. Left there and on
to Gainsville, LA to visit with old
friends of many years standing.
The weather was good all the way
from the Big Apple to FL. After
the 1st of Feb. we will head on to
Tampa and the big gang of A Co.
Hope to have a picnic the last
weekend of Feb. with many of the
members hopefully present.
The weather so far seems to
agree with both Mary and I. We
are looking forward to seeing
many of the 12th while in Florida.
It Would be nice to have a 12th
ADA Picnic in Florida either late
Feb. or early March for all. This
should give a boost to the Assn.
I pulled a boo-boo and left home
with all my files and stationary
still there, so I have no ditty bag
to add to this column.
Now that I must send all mail to
Ken Warnes by the 2nd of the
month please send all correspon-
dence to me no later than the 25th
of the month in order to get it to
Ken. It takes four days to get the
copy to Washington and that
leaves me three days to hunt, cuss
and punch the pages to have a
column for the 714th. So co-oper-
ate with me and get the news to
me and we will have a news
worthy paper for our Assn. Send
me the news even if it is a one
liner or two pages or more. You
are the ones that make this paper
worth while. The Hellcat News is
the only Armd. paper printed
every month keep it that way
with news of yourselves, your
family, we will get it in the paper.
This is the last time to get your
parts in gear to attend the
Midwest Chapter Meeting at
Kankakee, IL full details have
been in past issues of the Hellcat
News so check them for full infor-
mation.
The next issue of the News will
be too late for the reservations to
be in for the Eastern to be held at
the Sheraton-Pocono Inn in
Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania on
April 29, 30 and May 1, 1982. Get
the mail hopeing with your reser-
vation now before it is too late. I
will be there and hope to see
many more of the 12th ADA and
especially the 714th. Come on
don't let this pass without seeing
your old buddies.
Then too there is the Southeast
meeting in Nashville, TN and a
chance to visit the Grand Olde
Opera House as well as the new
Opryland. Details are in past
issues get there if you can for the
visit to the Country Music Hall of
Fame is something to really see
and you are also close to the
Division Base of WWII, Fort
Campbell, Ky.
Then there is the National
Reunion on July 8, 9, 10 and 11,
1982. To take place in St. Louis,
MO at the Stoufer Inn on the
banks of the Mississippi River.
There was a reservation card in
the January Issue of the News
send it in early to assure there is
a room for you. Who needs to
hang in a hall all night anyway, it
is awful hard on the neck. Mail it
now and don't put it off for too
many of us are at that age when
next year may be too late to see
an old buddy. Wm. Test wanted
so much to attend a National and
did so last year in Rochester and
he passed away in October. I am
so thankful that I had a wonderful
talk with him and his wife, Ann,
also had the pleasure of his
company at the Banquet Table.
Hope Ann can see her way to
attend some future Reunions.
To Stricoff and Moss it was a
welcome chat on the phone from
Julies and to Julie and Molly
Thank you for a wonderful time
and hope you will take a vaca-
tion and come to our part of the
world good old 1,000 islands and
the foothills of the Adiron-
dacks Mountains.
Yes, Mac, we escaped from the
deepfreeze of the north for the
rest of the winter and will return
around the 1st of April. No freeze
now at least not below zero here
in Florida.
Till next month it is great to be
a HELLCAT AND GREAT TO
HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF
THE HELLCATS. May God Bless
You All and keep you all well.

STRANGE CRITTERS IN THEM
HILLS, PODNER!
Probably the most discussed
topic in Rear Echelon during the
last weeks field exercise was what
kind of animal it was that attack-
ed three members of the band on
an outpost. Stories and opinions
on the four legged creature
differed as much as the names...
everything from wildcats to ring
tailed cats. The one point all
agreed upon was that they had
never seen an animal like it
before. After a bit of research it
was announced that the animal
was most like a marten, a carni-
vorous member of the weasel
family, however other believed it
was a type of mexican wild-
cat. The animal jumped out of a
tree when Pvt. William Owen,
clarinetist, hung his field bag on a
branch. T/5 Dan Paul and Pfc.
John P. Collins, trombonists, pelt-
ed the animal with rocks and one
of the men struck the fatal blow
with the stock of his weapon. The
only explanation that Owen could
give for the female animal try-
ing to claw him was that she
might have had young in the area
that she thought were in danger.

HALFTRACKS LEAVE
NO SPOOR
Camouflage, that infantryman's
standby, had a faithful servant in
T/5 John R. Littler of B Company,
66th AIB, until one day during the
last division problem when his
buddies heard Littler shouting,
"Where's my halftrack?" He had
camouflaged it so well the first
day that when he tried to find it
two days later, he just could not.
For two hours Littler roamed the
area, looking high and low for his
track. Between trees, behind
bushes, under rocks (it might
have shrunk), everywhere...but
no track. "I asked everyone I met
if they had seen my track, but no
