Someone once said, "No news
is good news." I don't think it
is so good when a unit represent-
ative doesn't hear from any mem-
bers of his outfit. The help of all
of you is needed if we are to keep
up-to-date with the activities of
the 494th. Now, I know that many
of you have most likely been in-
volved in politics, but the rush in
that is over, so how about letting
us know what you and yours are
doing and "What's happening."
Two weeks ago, my wife Lucy,
son Henry, and I went to visit the
Vernon Wates (493d) in Edgefield,
S.C. We had a wonderful week-
end, and Vernon and I are mak-
ing an appointment to see the
manager of the Ocean Forest
Hotel, Myrtle Beach, South Carol-
ina, to discuss offerings for our
1970 Hellcat Convention. You'll
be hearing from us soon.
Although none of you have writ-
ten, you must have sent some of
the cold weather down south. We
are having freezing temperatures,
rain, ice, and some snow in the
upper part of the state.
Wish there were more news,

Hello Good Folks,
We shall start this column to
the most thrilling event we have
had the pleasure to witness in
many years. Yours truly, Dot
and my son Patrick were present
when the plaque was presented to
the memorial building at the
Tomb of the unkown soldier. We
know it will be given full cover-
age in the HCN but we couldn't
pass this occasion to be just an-
other happening. To me it is a
culmination of one of the 12th
AD's outstanding achievements.
Having spent a great portion of
my life in the service and obser-
ved many dedications, to me this
was the ultimate in perfection.
Our Assn. should be commended
for this fine effort, and the people
who arranged, and did the work
to complete the project, warmly
applauded, in print as well as
any other method that can be set
up. On behalf of the 56th A.I.B.
we thank you. (We really enjoyed
the dinner and fine company we
had later in the evening. We hope
Bob will write the full details on
this.)
The letters didn't arrive so we
will have to improvise (Harold
send me news please I can use
it). We are proud to have as our
guest this weekend John Backs
son of Warren and Shorty. John
is a real fine lad and one of the
most versatile young men we
have met in a long time. He is
presently stationed at Aberdeen
Md. One of our most pleasant
surprises was the arrival of our
son Bill who has just arrived
from Fort Sill, Okla. He has a
leave then on to the West coast
for assignment to Korea or Viet
Nam. So we have two young
soldiers this week. "Makes Dad

So, as Dean Martin would say
keep those cards and letters com-
ing we really enjoy the one's we
didn't get. Just as a point of in-
terest A1 Lipshultz was again on
hand with his trusty camera to
record the event for posterity. He
was able to obtain the assistence
of Fred Erichson who unfortun-
ately got up on the platform, but
then couldn't get off until the
ceremony was over. His charming
wife was trying to operate two or
three cameras. Al's lovely wife
was present for dinner and to put
it the words of my son the Ladies
were really cool folks. So there
we are for another edition.
God Bless you and yours
