Rep. and Gorgeous Spouse from Hq. Div.
We spent a restful week at Tanglwood Lakes in Hawley, PA
en route home from the reunion, and our old buddies Dave and Jo
Golden (714th) visited us there for a few days. The weather was
perfect, and the guys golfed and the gals gabbed!
July 4th, for more years than I care to count anymore,
is my birthday, and Eileen's is July 5th (NB from Eileen -
I'm much younger, of course!) I've always taken pride in
the fact that all good Americans, even those who don't
know me, display the flag every year on my birthday!
God love and keep you all, My Buddies!
Fraternally, George

Oh Beautiful For Spacious Skies - Glory, Glory Hallelujah -
O, Say Can You See? Just getting you in practice for a lively
Fourth of July with flying flags, picnics, and some fireworks
displays. Here is a special display for you. Sssshhhh BOOM!!!
That is a rocket bursting over the 17th, but it's not just a big
light, it is the light of a new 17th member. Ken Bakken of A
company. How about that for some fireworks. Here is his service
report and M. O. Ken came to the 12th with the ASTP migration
and was put in a mortar squad so he rode around a lot with that
"great Halftrack driver" (Ken's words) Bob Luedtke. Bob, does
Ken get an extra piece of cheese for that unsolicited testimonial?
When he was wounded he returned to a hospital in England. He
went back to the continent with the 355 Engineers and then was
sent to Camp (now Fort) Carson, Colorado for a medical dis-
charge. After earning a degree from UCLA in Industrial Manage-
ment he worked for 28 years with Lawyers Cooperative Publish-
ing Co. He and his wife Pat (high school sweetheart) have a son
and a daughter. Now you know all about him, but I'll bet there is
more you will learn when we meet in Omaha.
Along with a big "It's Great To Be A Hellcat" welcome
to Ken and Pat let's give a big thank you to Dale Quist,
Dennis Lynds, and Bob Luedtke for contacting him after I
gave his address in an earlier H.C.N. Really men, this is
important.
I have another surprise for you later. I want to make sure you
don't stop reading now.
A message came from Clarence Johncox with some
questions about Jerry Trinka. Some time back I asked for
help in bringing him into the organization. Neither I nor
Clarence have heard from him. Maybe some of you can get
him interested. I don't remember exactly which month the
H.C.N, carried his address but if you can't find it contact
Clarence Johncox.
A drum roll and a cymbal crash for our friends the Johncox
couple. They celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on the 5th of
June. As Clarence says time "sure does fly." Now that we have
congratulated you folks, you are going to get a scolding. What
kind of a statement is "we haven't decided if we will come to
Omaha?" I'll tell you what kind of statement it is!! It is a rotten
one. We expect to shake your hand in September so how about
them apples?
Pat Harness, Hq, 56, wrote to tell us about a service he
is offering to Hellcats who have not yet read or want a
copy of Brendan Phibb's book "The Other Side Of Time."
Pat owns and operates a book store and he will send you a
paperback edition for only $6.00. He says he isn't making
any money (the $6.00 includes mailing and handling) but
boy, is he ever making a lot of friends!! Send a check to
Pat Harness, Richmond Book Store, 6423 Richmond Ave.,
Houston, TX 77057.
I have written all this stuff and haven't yet nailed you on the
Omaha issue. You are all big boys and girls and should be able to
make your own decision, right? That was what we all thought
when we were at Barkeley, but we were wrong, right? So Uncle
Willy, your ever lovin rep, along with some of the higher brass
(who shall remain unnamed) will make it for you!! Sit your rear

down - take pen in hand - fill out the registration form - drop it in
the post office. Now don't you feel better? I certainly do.
I'm not after Jim and Hazel LaFond because they have
already sent in their reservations. They haye a daughter
who lives near Omaha so they will be able t:> take care of
a couple activities at the same time. This ney1 statement is
intended as a challenge to you B men. You might say the
question is "to B or not to B." Ugh!! Another bad one.
Seriously though you guys, Jim says he is disappointed
more of his buddies from the company don't attend. That
sounds like a challenge to me. How about you? There
were more from that company last year so is there any
reason it couldn't be better this time? Jim and Hazel found
out pigs can be stubborn when they tried to "round-em-
up" at the daughter's place. I don't think Jim is the age to
be taking up rodeo work.
They had a close call last March when the fumes from a new
floor Jim was putting down were ignited by a spark from the
refrigerator, but due to the quick thinking of Jim, who grabbed
an extinguisher, the house was saved. The kitchen, diningroom,
and livingroom were a mess. Hazel says it was a miracle our
buddy wasn't killed. A frightening story with a happy ending.
It's time for the friends of Virgil Mathison, B, to make
contact with him. The LaFond's called to encourage him
to go to Omaha, but he is very ill and cannot travel. We
send our best to our buddy and want him to know we are
thinking about him.
Special news flash from the breadbasket of the nation -
Kansas, and especially from Emporia. The largest turnout in the
history of the mid-continent picnic was reported by a dancing,
(well, maybe not dancing) elated Ken Bradstreet.
After all my work to get the 17th there, guess who
didn't make it? You got it chum. Lola will attest I was
there in spirit, but the body back in Fort Collins was
pretty grumpy for a couple of days. The picnic drew 87
people from 13 states and 13 units. Representing the 17th
were the Baris and their daughter and son-in-law, the
Dombros, Sv; John and Audrey Priestly, C; the Hawking,
C; Colliers, Hatts, Rumas, Kirchners, and Ailene Durst, A.
Bradstreet always has something special at these affairs,
so this year he planned a tornado warning when Ruma
and Kirchner got there. Ruth Bradstreet sent those guys
to the basement (I really think it was to get them away
from the beer) but Ken said that it wouldn't do Ruma any
good because he is so ornery God would find him anyway.
I guess it was super fun especially when they raffled off
an M60 tank. If you want more of the story come to 72nd
and Dover in Omaha.
As soon as the print-outs of registrations come from Heine
and Grebl you signees will receive your travel, C. P., and unit
dinner orders.
I heard from Bob Downey and he accepted my offer to
help with the memorial service so we will be trying to put
