Here's the status of the Headquarters Unit Battalion flag, as
of July 2nd: we received 2 more contributions, from Max Schwartz
and Joseph Hollerbach (Div. Hq.), leaving us about $90.00 short.
To put it on the line, only 10 of you Hq. Unit members have
donated anything towards our Battalion Flag, and Colonel Field
informs us without the full amount, the flag will not be made! So
send a check, made out to the 12th Armd. Div., and mail it to me,
so we can have our very own Battalion Flag, like the other
Battalions.
FROM: Joseph Hollerbach: Enclosing an article from
the June 1991 issue of the USAA FOUNDATION, titled
"World War II Remembered" - "World War II: Personal
Accounts - Pearl Harbor to V-J Day" is a collection of
dramatic letters from servicemen who witnessed the
heroics and horrors of history's most devastating global
war. The National Archives is seeking letters and diaries
of those who served to be part of the traveling exhibit

Three characters in a picture are one thing, hut not

which will commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pearl
Harbor. To complete the collection, the Archives needs
letters pertaining to these areas of the conflict: Pearl
Harbor, Stalingrad, Sicily, Italy, Anzio, meeting the
Russians at the Elbe River, V-E Day, V-J Day, the A-
Bomb, Merchant Marines and See-Bees. If you have letters
or diaries that describe a first-hand account of these
events, and you would be willing to lend them for this
exhibition, please send copies (not originals) to the Office
of the Curator, The Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and
Museum, 2313 Red River Street, Austin, Texas 78705.
From the selected letters and diaries will come the voice
of the Americans who fought in this World War. In
addition, the San Antonio exhibition will include captured
enemy documents, such as Hitler's Will and Political Test-
ament, and art from World War II. The exhibition, spon-
sored by the USAA Foundation, will be open December 7,
1991 through March 31, 1992 at the San Antonio Museum
of Art. Many activities are planned during this time. After
it leaves San Antonio, the National Archives exhibit will
travel for nearly four years across the nation to each of
the eight presidential libraries, finishing in Wshington
D.C. in 1995. NB From Joe Hollerbach: I have a Japanese
pistol which I recovered between Rosario and Damortis
at the end of the war. I wasn't with the 44th Battalion, but
it should be familiar to some of those men. I'll bring it to
Omaha and if it's not of interest to anyone I'll contact the
Johnson Museum. I've been trying to identify my unit,
hoping some one would recognize some names not in the
directory. I took basic training at Camp Campbell, Ken-
tucky, from October 1942 through March 1943. S/Sgt.
Casadone was platoon sergeant, 1st Lt. Oliphant was
Company Commander, 2nd Lt. Isaacs was Platoon Leader,
and Joe Romero was tank Driver. I was radio operator.
Would you believe that Joe Romero would let out a shrill
whistle whenever he was going to hit a ditch or large
tree. The whole crew would put their helmets against the
tank and Lt. Isaacs would come home with bruised ribs
because he didn't know what the whistle meant! A class-
mate from Harding High School, Ralph Hawkins, was
also in the 12th Division. He died about four years ago.
I've talked to his son, Steve, a few times, and have been
trying to get in contact with Ralph's widow. His son says
his mother doesn't want to talk about her husband, so I've
been waiting for an opportune time to contact her. I
attended the North Central Chapter Meeting in Mankato,
MN on April 19/20, 1991. Lots of fun and it's good to
