March 1986

Paul Hempfling, Div. Trns., receives the Blue Ribbon
award from Bob Saehloff (493), who acted as MC for the
presentation. Pres. Forrest Smith is in the foreground,
while Len Dooley (92nd) committee member, stands in
background. Picture by Eldon Kohler, 92nd.
well deserving as they certainly
have had their share of grief
and despair. Once again we
express our deepest sympathy
and condolences for the loss of
their son Chip and wish their
daughter a miraculous and
speedy recover.
Paul Hempfling, Sr. (Div Tns)
writes from Houston, Texas
informing us that he now has a
complete set of service ribbons
and the associating miniature
medals and is awaiting the
arrival of the Rhin et Danube
and Victore De Colmar medals
that he ordered from France.
He is also working with Mike
Gorman (C/134), Div. Service
Officer, in an effort to get offi-
cial authorization from the War
Dept. for the 12th's third battle
star and also seeking official
documentation as to whether
the 12th was awarded the
French Fourragere. Any an-
swers and/or details will be
forthcoming.
Paul will never give up. He
has sent out some 20 letters in
an effort to find more of the
long-lost since Christmas and
hopes to collar more and get
them into the association. He
closes stating that he hopes to
make the Eastern Chapter but
is making definite plans for
attendance in Long Beach.
My good buddy Don Seedborg
(B/82) who contributes much
input to our column is heard
from again. Writing from our
1986 National Reunion head-
quarters, Long Beach, CA, Don
tells us that he, on the date of
his letter, is also getting one off
to another one of our mutual
buddies, Ed "Graffito" Strazdes
(C/56). He, Bob Head (714) re-
union chairman and Bob Sch-
wartz (495) head of finances
recently had a mid-winter get-
together aboard the Hotel Queen
Mary to detail plans for the
forthcoming national reunion.
Don will be in charge of activi-
ties that include tours of inter-
esting sites, exhibits, places to
dine, among other things in
order to see that all have a good
time during their stay in south-
ern California. He adds that it
won't be necessary to visit the
movie studios, although he does
have a Universal City tour all
set up, as they are shooting on
location almost every day in
Long Beach and recently did
some shooting for a TV movie
in front of the Queen Mary. No
matter where you go in L.A. or
around Hollywood, they are
filming all the time on the
streets.
Don says that he is packed
and ready to leave for Deau-
ville, France where he will
attend the Rhin et Danube re-
union in mid-April and then
join us at our Eastern Chapter
in Harrisburg upon his return
in early May.
The group mourns the loss of
another one of our members. He
is Ted Hollot who served with
the Division MP Platoon. To
Ted's family, we express our
deepest regrets and sympathies.
Leon Gephart (Hq/Sup Bn)
sends in dues but with no news.
COLA INCREASES
FOR MILITARY RETIREES
Bob Saehloff (Sv/495), who is
General Manager of The Daily
Freeman in Kingston, NY, re-
ceived a message from Robert I.
Remsnyder, Mayor of the near-
by community of New Paltz,
NY, outlining the message he
was sending to President Rea-
gan concerning the possible
effect of Gramm-Rudman on the
COLA increases for military
retirees.
We will not quote his entire
message, but for the benefit of
any of you who are receiving a
military pension, you may want
participate. If you desire to do
so, you can send a Western
Union MAILOGRAM message
to President Reagan by dialing
the toll-free number l-(800) 325-
6000; ask for Operator 40. Tell
Operator 40 to send the military
equity message to President
Reagan. Ask that your name or
organization accompany the
message. You will be billed
$4.00 on your telephone bill.
Bob Saehloff thought this
might be of interest to some of
our members, and asked that it
be passed on to you.
Norb Bruemmer,
Exec. Secretary
Ditto a rejuvenated member,
Hyman Lippman who served
with Divarty.
FURTHERMORE ... A plea
comes from our Exec. Sec. Norb
Bruemmer to please inform him
of a change of address and pre-
ferably prior to the time of the
move. Postage due for undeli-
vered copies of the HCN can
amount to a goodly amount of
unnecessary expense to the
association. This can be avoid-
ed with the sending of a simple
postcard and you will be assur-
ed of your copy on the first
mailing and stop the expense of
having to remail at the new
address.
Start packing your weekend
clothing and necessities. The
Western will commence in a few
days after you receive this copy
of the HCN and this could be
the last call for the Midwest as
that one will be in early April.
Also to follow in April are the
Southwest and North Central.
Attend them. You'll have a
great time with these smaller
intimate groups. And don't for-
get the BIGGEST one of all . . .

As of this writing, only one
17th man has stated what Chap-
ter he was going to. Geza and
Elnora Evan, B/17th, will
attend the Eastern. Surely more
Hellcats than this will be going
to the different Chapters. Edna
and I will be at the Midwest,
and probably one other. Now
lets get the word to me as to
who is going to the Association
Reunion in Long Beach.
Edna and I have talked over
the following announcement.
This is my last year as 17th
Unit Rep. (and Membership
Chairman). Unit Representa-
tives are voted into office by the
members of their Unit attend-
ing the national reunion, so if
you can volunteer for this
assignment, send your name to
me, or to our Executive Secre-
tary, Norb Bruemmer in order
that your name can be submit-
ted as a Unit Rep candidate for
the balloting at the next reun-
ion. The candidate does not
have to be present at the Long
Beach reunion, but he must tell
us that he will accept the
