HELLCAT NEWS
Sept. 1982
one in Plainfield, Conn. We're a
little closer to Eldon Kohler now. I
guess Louis and he will get to-
gether more often to talk over old
times. I'm sure going to miss
seeing the friends we make each
time we go to a reunion. We
attended the Rochester reunion
and loved it. We had Sunday
brunch with you and Jim Brown
and Eldon. Hope you remember
us as we're sure going to miss you
all this year. We do plan to go to
the next years' reunion as now
the only thing to prevent this
would be our health. Right now
we're both exhausted. The picture
in the June issue of the HCN of a
B Troop Hellcat guarding a POW
is my husband Louis Britton. My
husband feels so bad that he won't
be in St. Louis to see "Lucky"
Likens. My husband says that he
was a great officer and friend that
he won't forget. If anyone is
coming up this way and would like
to drop in and chat - just call.
We'll be glad to have you visit us.
We moved to Conn, to be closer to
our children. Our son and daugh-
ter have been living in Conn, for
19 years. Our granddaughter
(daughter's daughter) will have
her first baby in September mak-
ing us great grandparents. Boy it
sure does give us a feeling we're
getting old. Louis's Mother is still
living which will bring 5 genera-
tions into the family. Our other
son William is stationed at Fort
Campbell and will be getting out
August 3rd. (Louis wrote his
letter to Ken Warnes - The only
significant thing he had to say is
that he's not sweet 16 any more).
Eldon Kohler: (4 Postcards
from Germany) - Back in Deutsch-
land to get some more pictures for
the HCN. Lots of changes around
Kitzengen. Deutsch beer is better
than ever.
C Troop: Eugene G. Cross -
Enjoyed your article. It certainly
brought back names and faces
from the long-distant past when
you related your call from
Gardiner, whom I recall was
under the wing of Sgt. Brady at
that time. (Wrong Gene - Try
Wibking) I often wonder about
Harold "Swede" Carlson of C
Troop and John King of F Troop.
I have some photographs that I
would be happy to loan to you if
you think they would be of any
interest. They were snapshots
made at Fort Campbell and Camp
Barkely. After the Division had
completed its POE tests and was
packing up to ship out, I flunked
the POE medical exam and ended
up at the hospital at Barkeley
where I was a non-paying guest
for about two months. I also spent
some time assigned to CCA.
(Gene - Sorry you were wrong on
your guess about the picture on
Page 18, July HCN. We would
welcome your sharing your photos
with us anytime you are ready.)
Anthony J. Fama: Well it has
been quite a few years since we
saw each other. The last time was
in Atlantic City way back. Lots of
things have happened since then.
Last month Marty Lifgren called
me up but unfortunately I was in
the hospital with a heart attack.
Later I did call Marty. We had a
nice chat, but a sad one. He told
me that Bill Maggio was in a VA
hospital in bad shape. I was in the
hospital for 15 days. I'm not
supposed to do anything now
because that was my second heart
attack plus a stroke since 1975.
We live in a sad world. The day
that I got out, I received the bad
news that on July 1, Bill Maggio
had died. I have 3 children. Louis
is a junior in college and Ann and
Michael are in high school. Louis
has been my biggest problem. In
1975 he came up with Hodgkin's
Disease in his left leg. After 7
long years he lost the battle and
the leg had to come off. He is
waiting for an artificial one now.
It's been a tough year of going
back and forth to Memorial Hos-
pital in New York, but this is life
and we have to take it as it comes.
I wanted to go to the Eastern, but
it was impossible. Hope the 12th
will have its convention around
here so that I'll be able to go. I
sure would like to meet all you
guys again. (After receipt of the
sad news about Bill Maggion from
Tony, I contacted Bill's widow
Edna in Islip Terrace, New York.
I have extended condolences in
behalf of all of the 92nd. Marty
Lifgren attended the wake.)
D Troop: James A. Cuffia (By
Betty - We had hoped to visit the
Bells in Cleveland, Tenn., this
summer, but were unable to do so
because of Jimmies leg trouble.
After that was better he got a
kidney infection so we spent all of
his vacation at home. He hopes to
retire next year. He has 42 years
with Allegheney Ludlum Steel
Corp. After he retires we may be
able to make some of the re-
unions, God willing.
Edward Jarosz - Sorry I
couldn't make St. Louis. I hope to
make it next year and stay longer.
Nashville will be more fun for me.
I'll drive down and visit Fort
Campbell, Clarksville and Colum-
bus Georgia.
E Troop: Wilson J. Hinkel -
Just a couple of lines to let you
know what a fine time we (39
Troopers) had in St. Louis. Good
weather, fine foods and beauti-
ful fellowship with old (not liter-
ally) buddies. We wined and
dined, told a few jokes (I could-
n't remember any), toured the
city, went through the Arch
(Gateway to the West) and Sgt.
Auxier and I walked around the
baseball stadium. (We couldn't get
in, that's why we walked around
it.) Really and truly, if we ever
get the Eastern Chapter reunion
and the convention together, we
would have to think about having
some First Sgts. and a couple of
Lts. to fall out the troops. Has any
one heard from Lt. Reid, Lt.
Pepin, Lt. Perry or my old buddy
John Roth in Ohio? (Wilson, see
Hq and Sv troop above on Lee
Perry, Marion M. Reid, 1076
Laurel Lane, Pebble Beach, CA
93953 is a member. I don't have
anything on the others.) My
thanks, as a committee of one, to
all the comrades that made the St.
Louis convention a most memor-
able and successful one.
NOTES & STUFF:
The 92nd extends our thanks
and best regards to our outgoing
Executive Secretary - Ken
Warnes. (Good Show, Ken)
The entire St. Louis reunion
attendance listing is published
separately.
1982/1983 dues are due.
The picture on page 18, July
HCN is of none other than Eldon
Kohler our official 92nd photo-
grapher. Note the U.S. Constabu-
lary markings under the wind-
shield. (Eldon - weren't they
called the Potato Bug Cops?)
That's it Troopers. I've used up
my allocated space.
Good News: Coming next
month - great news about Flossie
McKenzie.

July was a great vacation
month. The Hellcat News even
got a vacation from the monthly
write up - 119th Engrs.
Dues are DUE. Payments to be
made to Norbert Bruemmer,
Exec. Sec., 1913 Jerome Drive,
Godfrey, Illinois 62035. The Hell-
cat News maybe a little late, but
"Norb" will have everything in
order as soon as possible. The
12th Armored Division Associa-
tion is a non profit organization
and we need many members to
keep the organization going that
we may enjoy the Hellcat News
and the annual reunions held each
year.
I think St. Louis laid a Red
Carpet to all who were able to
attend the Reunion. There were
so many nice places of interest.
We received a card from Ed
and Lupe Arvayo from Phoenix
Ariz, saying they arrived home
safely and enjoyed their visit in
St. Louis and the temperatures
there. Phoenix was 100 degrees
around that time.
I want to thank David Klena,
2224 Harrison St., Kingman, AZ,
for his very nice letter and
pictures. Glad to hear you are in
touch with Matt Deljanwan and
Paul Velasco and Cliff Lowther.
Hope to keep all you Buddies in
the 12th Armored Division Assoc-
iation. If you know of any men in
any Division that do not belong to
the association we would very
much appreciate any efforts to
gain new members.
A letter from Seymour Bate-
man, 121 Fox Road, Hollywood,
Florida. He wants to share the
news with you that a scroll from
the U. S. Holocaust Memorial
Council for the liberation of a con-
centration camp was awarded to
Hyman Lippman. The council was
created by Congress and approv-
ed by Pres. Reagan. Chaplain
Miller also received a scroll at an
event held in Miami, Fla. from the
U. S. Holocaust Memorial Council.
Perhaps some of you Buddies
recall this incident.
Seymour Bateman underwent
heart surgery. We all hope and
pray for health. Maybe another
year you will be able attend the
Nashville Reunion in Tenn. Bring
your family and all enjoy a
vacation.
