PRESIDENT'S
MESSAGE
You still have time to send in your reservations to both the
Hyatt Hotel, and for the reunion and unit dinners. The reunion
starts on August 27. There are a lot of changes to be made in
the constitution and by-laws, so be there for the vote at the
general meeting on Friday.
We have a big agenda for the council meetings, so I will be
very busy, along with other council members, but I will try to
visit all hospitality rooms sometime during the reunion.
I was told by personnel at the Wright Patterson AF
Museum that it is the largest AF museum in the USA. Don't
miss it.
Ollie and I attended the dedication of the KIA Monument at
Ft. Campbell on May 30. The monument is beautiful. Every-
thing turned out great. BG Melton, Deputy Commanding
General, Fort Knox; Colonel William L. Braddy, Chief of Staff,
Ft. Campbell; and Perpetuity Chairman Ted Blostein were the
speakers, with a few words by yours truly. The 101st Airborn
made a great contribution with two platoons, commanded by
Major Swope, along with the 101st Band. It was an honor to be
asked to present the Association wreath with General Melton
at the dedication ceremony.

I want to thank Gen. Melton, Col. Braddy, and all others at
Ft. Campbell, for their participation. A special thanks to Ted
Blostein and his committee, Jim Stone and Owsley Costlow,
for such a great job well done.
Postcards of the 12th Monument at Ft. Campbell are being
printed and will be available in the Quartermaster's room in
Columbus.
Following are Gen. Melton's comments at the dedication:
12th Armored Division - B. G. Melton, 30 May 1997
Fort Campbell, Kentucky
Good morning, Colonel Braddy, distinguished guests,
friends, and most importantly the veterans of the 12th
Armored Division - the Hellcats. All you troopers look abso-
lutely magnificent, the 101st Band you sound and look
wonderful - my thanks to Chief Standridge and Staff Sergeant
Powell. The Commander of Troops, Major Swope, be extremely

Last chance to sign up for Columbus Reunion. With so many
of you living in the Mid-West, we should have a good turn out.
Mary Shatto [A] will be attending her son Brian's wedding
over the Labor Day weekend. Maybe she'll get to next year's
reunion. In July, Mary will be joining a church group traveling
to Montana. They will be ministering to the Blackfoot Indians,
and will be doing some building. Maybe Mary will get a chance
to say hello to Helen and Joe Mielnik [A], who are also Mon-
tanians.
Bernice and Tom White [A] represented the 495 at Ken Brad-
street's Mid-Continent Hellcat picnic in Emporia, KS. Had a
great time. Next day, Ken had a pacemaker installed, he's fine
now. During this past cool spring, Tom planted his vegetable
garden early with the result of best garden ever. They're
hoping to make Columbus.
Ted Blostein [HQ-23] wrote to three Artillery Unit Reps.
While at the KIA ceremony at Ft. Campbell, he met a young
soldier stationed there. His grandfather, who died last year,
was a forward observer in the artillery; name is Robert Davis
of Chattanooga, TN. I have no record of a Robert Davis, but if
any of you knew him, please let me know.
Bob Saehloff [SV] attended the Northeast Chapter meeting
at Villa Roma. Small turn out this year, but a good time had by
all.
Heard from grapevine that Bob Burns [A], State Farm
Insurance Agent, visited Kingman, AZ. Wonder if he con-
tacted Editor/Executive Secretary Bob Head [HQ-714], a
former State Farm Claims Manager?
Don Sears [B] called again to let me know all's well in Prince-
ville, IL. I think Don's anxious to get on the road to Columbus.
Still want to hear from you if you're making plans to attend
the Unit Dinner on Friday, Aug. 29, 1997. Fill out the follow-
ing form and send to me ASAP. If you wish to pay in advance,
please send your check to me. Otherwise I '11 collect in Colum-
bus.

It's no secret our Association has been discussing termina-
tion of this magnificent group. The questions arise as to why,
when and how.

A Message to Widows of 12th ADA's Dearly Departed
Could we find a new life with the 12th ADA? As a group, can
we start communicating and perhaps look for ways to become
HELPKITTENS?
If this thought sparks some curiosity, please write to:
Helen Strazdes, 2272 Dexter Dr., Longmont, CO 80501-1550.
I will start a mailing list and begin a newsletter sharing all
ideas. — Helen
