some back problems so they might have difficulty getting to
Columbus.
The Nomadic tribe of Bernhards [B] had a super good time
catching Walleyes and Northerns in Northwestern Ontario.
John cooks his catch on shore but since they can only bring six
Walleye home, Joyce thinks that is mighty expensive eating.
What the heck, John, the worst day fishing is better than the
best day working.
Carl and Pat Helton helped keep the travel industry solvent
this summer. How is this for a "weekend jaunt"? London by
plane, cruise ship to three Scandanavian countries, Berlin [not
by ship], Finland, and Russia. This is a lot of continental
breakfasts.
How nice it would be to get by a month without having to
give death notices, but it is not to be. Jack Priestley [C] lost his
beloved wive, Audrey, on June 6. Audrey had beaten cancer
but chemo weakened her beyond recovery. She leaves behind
Jack and three sons. Our heart goes out to Jack at this time of
sorrow.
Just this minute George Hatt [A] called to tell me that Jack
Jensen [A] died recently. He had no particulars but Jack had
been very ill for a long time.
Come on you guys, put on your thinking caps. Brian D.
Ryder, son-in-law of Jerry Lapre who was with the 43rd AR at
Campbell and then transferred to one of our infantry bat-
talions at Barkeley, is seeking information about him. He was
discharged with a 31st Tank Bn in 1945. Brian would appre-
ciate any piece of information you could give. Let's help this
man if possible. Write to Brian D. Ryder, 2 Raymond St.,
Lincoln, RI 02865-2221.
Clarence and Irene Johncox [HQ] are singing the praises of
Sal and Lu Ignatti [B] for their work with the NE chapter. The
Johncoxes are doing well and Clarence is getting some new
choppers. They should make him look sexy. [His wife's words,
not mine.] We can check them out at Columbus. Irene is having
some back problems.
Good neighbor Carl Lyons [A] sent along a list of restaurants
near the Hyatt in Columbus to help the reunion goers. We
thank Carl for his concern.
Way back in September 1996, a report about Edward Sohod-
ski appeared but Clayton Compher [A] wrote to correct some
information. Sohodski was killed on April 18 by rifle fire in
Amsbach. He also mentioned Walter Heltenberg [A] who was
killed by automatic rifle fire when he raised up to throw a
grenade. This is the kind of information we are looking for.
Thanks, Clayton, for your great help.
Wifemate Lola and I just came back from Grafton, WI,
where we married off granddaughter No. 1. We drove north to
Door County and ended our stay in WI at the House On The
Rock near Madison. We had a great time in that beautiful
state. Took time to visit Clayton and Delores Harley [C] in
Menomonee Falls, and Velma and Bob Luedtke [A] in Apple-
ton. Stopped to see Bud Wiley [C] in Oshkosh but he was out to
lunch - literally. Ogallala, NE, was the scene of a neat supper
with John Preitauer [B] and his daughter, Connie Heinis, on
the way home from WI. We were pleased they could join us.
Idus Cleveland [SV] called to let us know Rosemary is still
hanging in there and he is still working. Idus' health has been
doing ok.
Never fail Ted Zawacki [HQ] came through twice this month
even though he has had a bad month. Vicki has not been well, a
storm dropped a tree on his stationwagon, his mower sent a
rock through the wagon's window, wind took down eight giant
trees. Must have been some storm. Sorry you won't be at
Columbus but a family wedding comes first. We will miss you.
Last month the death of Billy McCully [HQ] was reported
but Bob and Evelyn Cooper [HQ] add to their thoughts about
him. Evelyn first met Billy and Mona 28 years ago and had
spent time with them every late summer or early fall for 26
years. The Coopers have been busy with church conferences
and family gatherings. If they ever stay home one month it
will be in headlines. Just kidding. We rejoice with you in your
activities.
Jim and Bea Golip [C] took time to send some very fine pic-
tures they took at the Eastern meeting and at Ft. Campbell.
The ceremony was, by all reports, very moving and rewarding
to those who could be there. My guess is there have been major
changes since Hellcats roamed the area.
Will you be missed at the reunion? YES.
Will some of your buddies coming to see you be mad? YES.
Will you get another chance? HOPE SO.
Is it too late to register? NO.
Are you important to the group? SILLY QUESTION - OF
COURSE.
As Ted Zawacki said in his last letter: The 12th is like my
family. Come to your family reunion.
A heavy statement for your August consideration —
"Don't let what you can't do interfere with what you can do."
