An act of kind neighbors of the
Loop, Ashmore and Cedar Lake
communities harvested a 450-acre
crop of combine maize for injur-
ed M. D. Richardson, who farms
five miles southwest of Loop.
The project, known as a "grain-
lift" was completed in less than
a day.
Richardson has been crippled
for the last 14 months from an
injured leg, suffered in a fall
from a road maintainer. Neigh-
bors organized the "gainlift" to
help him because Richardson had
been unable to get the crop har-
vested.
Last Tuesday, by pre-arranged
plan, combines began to roll to-
ward the Richardson farm and
in a matter of a few minutes, 18
to 20 of them were moving up
and down the rows of maize. Ap-
proximately 12 trucks appeared
to haul away the grain as fast as
it was combined.
While the men were workoing,
women of the commmunity were
preparing a lunch which was
served at the Loop community
building. Seventy-seven persons
were at the lunch spread.
The movement to help Rich-
ardson was started by Durward
Williams, a neighbor, and Nolan
Sweatt, with an implement comp-
any in Lamesa. Rev. Horace Hitt,
Loop Baptist church, and Rev.
Joe Thompson, Ashmore Baptist
church, helped it along by an-
nouncing the project to their
congregations.
The Richardsons have seven
children, five of which attend
school. The' oldest 1 s 15. The
family has lived In Gaines coun-
ty for five years. This is the
first year on the present farm.
Previously Richardson had farm-
ed at Cedar Lake
The family is deeply appreciat-
ive of the aid extended by the
neighbors.
Recognition for extra effort in
the "grainlift" was given to R.
M. Gentry, Seagraves, who fur-
nished the butane G. B. Mayfield,
Lamesa, who furnished combine
parts and equipment; J. D. Mills
and Allan Byrd of Loop, who
furnished gaoline and others.
