Banquet is not a place that we

money in the bank so that we
can award each of the partici-
pants his premium check at the
banquet," stated Vinson "All of
these kids put a lot of work and
time into their projects, so we
need to do all that we can to see
that they get the monies they've
earned *
Meeting Set
The next monthly meeting of
the Shackelford County 4-H
Club has been scheduled for
Wednesday. March 12 at the
Albany Youth Center.
All club members and spon-
sors are encouraged to attend
and take part in the discussions.
Houston Update
As the Houston Livestock
Show begins winding down its
activities this week, two local
youngsters have returned home
with their results in competi-
tion.
Local 4-H members Chloe
Tankersley and Kayla Wilson
returned-from Houston this
week after showing their mar-
ket barrows alongside hundreds
of other entrants from across
the state.
.Although neither local girl
was placed high enough to' re-
ceive a ranking, the experience
gained at the show proved valu-
able learning material
Around 15.000 participants
representing over 930Texas4*-H
Clubs and FFA chapters typi-
cally compete each year at tile
Houston show, making it the
world's largest livestock show.
Local 4-H'er J.W. Askew will
be competing in the calf scramble
activities this week as well.
Askew will enter the Astro-
dome arena on Friday, Febru-
ary 28 with a couple dozen other
youngsters from across the state
to see who can catch a calf,
Upon catching one of the
calves, a participant is awarded
a $1,000 certificate to purchase
a registered beef or dairy heifer,
which he then has the opportu-
nity to take to the show ring in
next vear's show.
McLellan to intern here
Michael S McLellan. senior
Agricultural Services & Devel-
opment major from Tarleton
State.UDiversity, has begun his
internship with the Extension
Service in -Albany. He is under
the superv ision of Rocky Vin-
son. local county extension
agent.
McLellan will be in Albany
for 10 weeks for the purpose of
receiving traimhg in extension
service activities. This arrange-
ment has been made by mutual
agreement between the Texas
Extension Service and Tarleton
State University. The intern will
assist with all activities concern-
ing the local extension program.
Upon completion of this train-
ing period, he will receive the
Bachelor of Science degree in
Agricultural Services & Devel-
opment from Tarleton State
• University.
Filing begins for hospital district
In the week and a half since
the filing period for four. Albany
and Moran races opened, candi-
dates are beginning to sign up
for the May 3 local elections.
The filing period for the Al-
bany city council and mayoral
election, as well as the election
of two Albany school board mem-
bers started on Monday. Febru-
ary 17 and will continue through
March 19. ,
Moran's city council and
school board elections have the
same filing period February 17-
March 19
The Shackelford County Hos-
pital District board of directors
election will open its filing pe-
riod on Friday, February 28 for
three seats on the board.
Farly voting by personal ap-
pearance will be held from April
14 through April 29. Local vot-
er's can request applications for
mail-in ballots beginning March
4.
Hospital Election
Three of the seven at-large
seats on the Shackelford County
Hospital District's board will
expire this year, and county resi-
dents will have the opportunity
to begin signing up for the posi-
tions on Friday.
The hospital officially closed
its doors earlier this week on
Monday, February 24. but the
board will remain active'-as long
as the hospital district remains
in existence
Incumbents whose terms are
ending are. Eddie Bartee and
Terfesa Edmison, as well as Betty
Viertel. who resigned her seat
on the board a month ago.

pick up an application at the
hospital's business office. The
office will continue to be*opera-
tional on a daily basis for the
next several months,
The hospital's filing period
will run from Friday. February
28 through Friday, March 28.
To file for a position on the
ballot, candidates must have
their applications signed by 10
registered Shackelford County
voters

Council Positions
Voters living within the Al-
bany city limits will select two
council members and a mayor
.during the May 3 election.
The two-year terms of David
Cleveland and Ken Thompson,
as well as Mayor Harold Cox's
term, will be expiring this spring.
Cox filled a one-vear unexpired
term when he was elected last
year
In Moran. the terms of coun-
cil members HonaW Hallmark
and JoeClack will expire in May.
as will Mayor Marvin Kays'
term.
As ofTuesday afternoon. none
of the incumbents had filed for
re-election in either community,
nor had anyone else in either
community filed for their seats.
In both Albany and Moran,
candidates must sign up specifi-
cally for the mayoral race or the
: council race. The candidate with
the most votes in the mayor's
race will win the post, while the
top two candidates will be elected
from the slate 6f candidates for,
the council positions.
The Albany City Hall is open
from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and
the Moran office is open 8:00
a.m. to 12:00 noon each week-
day.
School Board Seats
Albany School district voters
decide the fate of two seats on
the board of trustees in the May
elections, both three-year terms.
Positions up for election this
year include Place 3 held by Jeff
Jones and the Place 4 seat held
by David Schkade.
Both incumbents had filed for -
re-election on Tuesday, accord-
ing to Helen Ivy at the A1SD
superintendents^ office.
Jovce Bacon is the only school
board member in Moran that x
has sought re-election. Other
incumbent board members
whose terms end in May are
Brawner Reed and Alvice
Parrish. 1
Candidates in both school
elections must live within tfrr-
boundaries of the school district.
In Albany, the candidates must
also file for a specific seat on the
board. "1
The filing period will continue
through March 19 and applica"-
tions can be picked up at the
superintendents' offices in both
Albany and Moran.
Esfandiary returns home

Esfandiary returned home on
Monday. February 24 after un-
dergoing brain surgery last
week
Esfandiary was air-lifted, to
the Zale Lipshy University Hos:
pital in Dallas last week for
emergency surgery after suffer-
ing a brain aneurysm on Satur-
day. February 15. His surgery
took place on Sunday, and he
spent the remainder of the week

been set up at Nancy Smith El-
ementary, and visitors should
notify the school at least one day
before they plan to eat in the
NSES cafeteria.
Parents ofkindergartners are
asked to eat lunch with their
children at 10:50 a.m. on Mon-
day, March 3, while sixth grad-
ers' parents are invited at 12:05
p.m. on the same day.
First graders' parents are
asked to join their kids for lunch
at 11:00a.m. on Tuesday, while
third graders' parents are asked
to come a little later at 11:40
a.m.
Parents of second graders are
invited for lunch at 11:10 a.m.
on Wednesday, and fourth grad-
ers' parents at 11:50 a.m.
Thursday's,lunch invitation
goes out to the parents of the
fifth graders, who are asked to
show up at 11:20 a.m.
If parents are unable to at-
tend on the scheduled day, they
may send a note to their child's
teacher indicating what day they
are able to be there. Friday is
the suggested day for schedule
changes.
Lunch for adult visitors will
cost $1.75, while children under
"school age will pay $1.50.
