Albany Lions Finish Year With Loss To 2nd Ranked Winters
The Albany Lions end
ed the 1982 season with a
34-0 loss to the Winters
Blizzards Friday night
and finished the year with
a 6 4 record. Winters will
advance to the bi-distriet
playoffs as a result of the
win as the second place
district 9 AA team.
The Lions were
plagued with turnovers,
losing the ball to the Bliz
zards 10 times during the
contestj
"It's difficult to go into
a game that you need to
be emotionally up for and
not have anything to play
for,'' said Coach William
"Tank" Nelson.
The Lions relinquished
their bid for the playoffs
last week by losing to the
Jim Ned Indians, while
the Blizzards were in a
must win" situation in
order to represent the
district. State ranked
'Losing the game was not a
negative reflection on our
kids . . . They did a good
job in many ways . .
Eastland kept a perfect
record to take the top
position in the playoffs.
"The loss was a dis
appointment to us, of
course, because we were
trying to match last
year's record of 7 3, but
Winters had an excellent
team and they had
everything to play for,
and they did," said the
coach.
Nelson stated that the
Lions played well during
parts of the game, but fail
ed to stop Winters from

"Losing the game was
not a negative reflection
on our kids however. We
did a good job in many
ways, but just didn't have
that emotional edge we

ceived a rating of II in
competition Wednesday,
November 3 in Shotwell
Stadium, Abilene

march because of the
wind," said a member

Devita Boyd and Debbie
Wilfong received a I
rating for their trio, as did
Devita Boyd in solo com
petition.

ing on a Christmas con
cert, the date of which
will be announced soon

Offensive leaders were
Todd Burdine, Brad
Petree, Bill Jon Rippey,
Bonner, Troy Shirley,
Rob Hudman, Boland, and
Jamie Garcia.
Oustanding players of
the season named by
Nelson included Garcia,
Mike Ivy, Balliew, Bonner
and Boland on defense,
and Hudman, Shirley, Ed-
die Wheeler, and Ken
Jones on offense.
"We really had a great
bunch of kids this year,"
said Nelson. "They have
done ,a lot more than
anyone believed they
could do."
Nelson thanked the
people of Albany for their
support of the team and
hoped that "everyone will
remember the good parts
of the season and not the
negative things."
Winters scored once in
the first quarter Friday
night on a keeper play by
quarterback Jeff Butts.
Ronnie Lujano split the
uprights for the PAT.
Dwight Hubbard and
Butts each scored during
the second period and Lu
jano added the additional
points to give the Bliz
zards a 2H) halftime lead
Butts scored twice
more during the third
period, followed each time
with Lujano kicks to give
the home team their 34-0
victory.
