Lions Roar staff wins Star Award
For the first time in school
history, the Albany High School
Lions Roar student newspaper
has received a coveted Star
Award, as well as earning a Dis-
tinguished Merit Award for the
second year in a row.
Albany High School yearbook
and newspaper staff members
were also awarded a number of
individual statewide awards
during the Interscholastic
League Press Conference (ILPC)
held April 7-8 in Austin.
Fourteen local students, along
with two sponsors, traveled to
Austin for the conference, which
included numerous instructional
sessions along with the awards
ceremonies. Principal Tommy
Terrell also attended.
For the third year in a row,
the AHS yearbook won an Cer-
tificate of Achievement, the sec-
ond highest rating. The 2004-
2005 edition was submitted for
judging.
Newspaper Recognition
Albany was the only small
school newspaper in the state to
be given an ILPC Star Award,
as well as the only Class A school
to receive a Distinguished Merit
Award.
"Our goal for this year was to
repeat our Distinguished Merit
award from last year," said news-
paper sponsor Donnie Lucas,
"but I don't think any of us
thought we were in the running
for a Star Award. Those are nor-
mally given to 4A and 5A news-
papers with much larger staffs."
"Our kids really took to heart
the recommendations of the
judges from last year's critique
and worked hard to improve the
quality of the paper," Lucas con-
tinued. 'They were really ex-
cited to receive this recognition."
The Lions Roar received a
Bronze Star, placing the news-
paper in the top five percent of
school newspapers statewide. It
was one of only 24 student pa-
pers to earn the recognition, with
five receiving Gold Stars and the
others Silver and Bronze Stars.
"There weren't any 2A schools
on the Star list and I didn't rec-
ognize any of the names as 3A
schools," related Lucas. "And
there was only one 2A school
that got a Distinguished Merit
Award."
Newspapers from throughout
Texas are sent to ILPC for cri-
tique and judging, according to
ILPC Director Jeanne Acton.
Judges rate the papers and nomi-
nate the top ones for Stars, which
then go before another panel of
judges for a final decision.
"Approximately 45 newspa-
pers were nominated for Stars,
and from that only 24 were se-
lected to receive a Star," Acton
said. "The competition was ex-
tremely tough this year.
'Texas is known to have some
of the strongest scholastic publi-
cations in the nation, so when a
newspaper receives a Star from
Texas, it usually is one of the
best student-produced papers in
the nation," Acton continued.
'The ILPC director and one of
the judges, who was a longtime
former ILPC director, made it a
point to meet our kids and they
were extremely complimentary
about the paper," commented
Lucas. 'They both noted how
rare it is for a 1A school to re-
ceive a Star Award, especially
with a staff of just five students."
Many of the 4A and 5 A schools
have newspaper staffs of 50 to
100 students, with publications
featuring full color throughout
dozens of pages.

Pledges needed before banquet
Pledges and bids for the 2006
Shackelford County Youth and
Livestock Show are coming in
fairly well, but according to as-
sociation treasurer Robert
Willen, more than $10,000 must
still be collected before the May
6 Buyer-Seller Banquet just
three weeks away.
"We've collected about 70 per-
cent of the pledges, but the last
part always comes in slower,"
commented Willen.
The 2006 Buyer-Seller Ban-
quet for stock show participants
and supporters is set for Satur-
day evening, May 6 at the Nancy
Smith Elementary School caf-
eteria, starting at 7:00 p.m.
Willen reminded financial
supporters that their donations
have to be in the bank so that
checks can be distributed to stock
show participants on the night
of the banquet.
'This money is already com-
mitted to the kids and they're
expecting to get their checks,"
he continued. "Many of them
have loans to pay back and other
obligations they need to take
care of."
Student Responsibilities
Stock show participants have
several responsibilities that
need to be checked off their lists
before attending the May 6 ban-
quet, according to county 4-H
and FFA sponsors.
Students must have com-
pleted all thank you notes to
bidders by May 1. The notes
need to be taken, unsealed and
complete with stamps, to Shack-
elford County 4-H sponsor Rocky
Vinson, Albany High School FFA
sponsor Chris Beard or Moran
ag teacher Grant Robinson. The
sponsors will then check the
student's name off their lists.
Unless the notes are finished
and mailed to each of the bid-
ders before the banquet, exhibi-
tors will not be eligible to pick up
their checks that evening.
Also, students who utilized
pens at the AHS ag barn are
required to clean the area before
receiving their checks.
Applications for the Watt R.
Matthews Memorial Scholar-
ship are due a week before the
banquet, on May 1 in Vinson's
office at the Shackelford County
Courthouse.
The $1,000 scholarship
award, which is sponsored by
First National Bank, Isfbased on
leadership, character, scholas-
tics, service to community,
achievement and cooperation.
Finally, students and their
families are asked to bring a
vegetable dish and a dessert to
the banquet. The stock show
association will provide the
meat.
