In reply to Com. Eubank.
At the recent term of the
Commissioners' Court occurred
a convincing demonstration of
the correctness of the position
of those who are opposing the
hasty sale of the county's
league of school land. Com
missioner Eubank, who seems
to be particularly struck with
the idea shoving it off as soon
as possible, voted iu favor of
accepting a bid ©f $6.75 per
acre. Had the proposition car-
ried (figuring on his forty-year
basis) he would have beaten
the county out of $21,033.
Fortunately the other commis-
sioners refused to go with him,
and a few houra delay resulted
iu the bidder raising his bid to
$8. per acre, amounting to th«
difference Btated in favor of the
county. An id-a m>ty b* form
«d from t-liifi incident, wliafc tli«
county might gain by delaying
tli« sale for a few years.
Thurn was pivtty good evi-
dence before" the court that the
land was worth $11 per acre
Of course $2,479.68 annual in-
terest paid in advance "looks
good" as indicated by Com.
Eubank, but it appears to us
that $3,409.56 looks nearly a
thousand a year better. It is
also recognized that $134,611.20
is a "pretty good price for a
league of land," but what good
business man would sell it for
that sum when he knows it is
worth over $50,000 more?
It is not a question of a dif-
ference in the amount of a lease
and the interest on sale price
that is involved in this matter,
but rather whether the court is
going to avail itself of an op-
portunity to sell the land for
its value or simply shove it off
at a sacrifice to same specula-
tor.
A lease may not bring in
much monpy, but while it runs
the land will be increasing in
value and still belong to the
county.—Breckinridge Demo-
crat.
