Lions face undefeated Indians Friday
By Donnie A. Lucas
The Albany Lions took an-
other step towards a District 9A
playoff berth with a 28-0 shut-
out over the Rotan Yellowham-
mers last Friday, setting up a
showdown against the Haskell
Indians Friday between the only
two teams still undefeated in
district play.
Kickoff at Indian Stadium in
Haskell is set for 7:30 p.m.
"Haskell has an outstanding
football team and we have to go
to their field, which makes it
even more difficult," said Coach
Denney Faith. "This will be a big
challenge for our guys."
The undefeated Indians are
tb^fe defending District 9A cham-
pions, handing the Lions their
only district loss last year.
Haskell is 3-0 in district with
wins over Munday, Hamlin and
Rotan.
' "We will have to play without
making a lot of mistakes, be real
aggressive on defense to stop
their running game and create
some turnovers," said the coach.
"We have prepared well and our
guys are playing with confi-
dence."
The coach also encouraged
Albany fans to make the trip to
Haskell to support the Lions in
their last regular season road
game.
"This is what we have been
preparing for the entire season."
The Lions will host Munday
in the final home game on No-
vsjnber 4, with the Moguls still
iriijhe playoff picture with only
o»e district loss to Haskell.
Fflith Pleased With Intensity
:»*rhe coach commended the

Faith said. "We pursued the ball

The coach praised several
defensive players for their ef-
forts during the game including
Robby Maldonado and Preston
Grun at defensive tackle. "They
both had their best games of the
season."
Also credited with outstand-
ing games were linebackers Cody
Hilliard and Brock Jones.
Others getting named as
standouts were corners John
Cope and Russell Baker, defen-
sive ends Trey Davis, Jayton
Bailey and Kevin Moreno, and
the secondary including Blake
Brewster Slone Balliew, Dono-
van Clevenger, Nate Walker and
Justin Winters.
"At times our offense played
really well, but we turned the
ball over too many times on
fumbles and penalties that we
haven't been having. In a differ-
ent game, that could really hurt
us."
The coach did say that the
offensive line had a better night.
"Our offensive line did a bet-
ter job of blocking and staying
with their blocks."
Linemen recognized by the
coach were Jayton Bailey, Tan-
ner Scott, Kevin Moreno, Preston
Grun, Chris Castaneda and
David Waller.
"Brandon Powell and Trey
Davis ran hard and Blake
Brewster had some good plays
at quarterback."
The Lions' starting quarter-
back Tom Hill has been on the
sidelines the last two games with
an ankle injury. Faith said that
he is hoping to have him back
this week.
How They Scored
After fumbling away their
first shot on offense, Albany dug
in and mounted a 58-yard series
on the ground. Taking nine plays
to cross the goal, Powell plowed
over from the two-yard line for
the score and Maldonado kicked
the PAT to give the Lions a 7-0
lead.
Rotan fumbled the ball on the
first play of the second quarter,
giving the Lions the ball at their
own 30 yard line. Blake Brewster
hit Donovan Clevenger with a
44-yard pass to move quickly to
the Rotan 26 yard line, and
Powell ran the ball up the middle
on the next play for the touch-
down. Maldonado kicked the
PAT.
Albany scored again just be-
fore the half with Brewster
breaking loose for a 28-yard run.
Maldonado again kicked the
PAT to give the Lions a 21 -0 lead
a the half.
The Lions' only two drives of
the third quarter ended on turn-
overs.
Albany started the final scor-
ing series in the fourth quarter.
Brewster found Clevenger in the
end zone with a 20-yard pass for
the tally and Maldonado kicked
the PAT for a perfect four-of-
four during the game.
