Indian Monkeys Assume
Role of Bold Bandits
Depredations of monkeys at the
hlU nt Ion of Martlieran, near
Koinbay, Indlu, ure causing annoy-
ance and nnxlety. Cases have been
reported where various articles und
food have been snatched away
from women and children, and In
one lnstnnce a well-organised raid
was carried out on a meat safe
full of fruit. Monkeys abound all
over southern India, but It la un-
usual for them to become so daring
as to play the role of highwaymen.
In many parts of Indlu monkeys,
an well as peacocks, are encour-
aged by Hindus to live In the tem-
pts precincts, and often near the
Idol. Hanuman, "the monkey god."
One railway station In India Is lit-
erally In the hands of monkeys,
who swarm all over the roof; and
passengers are regularly warned to
close the windows of the carriages.
Failure to observe this warning In-
evitably results In the loss of food
and small articles from carriages.
Hair Almost Indcatructibla
All mammals are supplied with
hair, although the quality varies
greatly. It may be of the softest
down, hardly perceptible on the
child's cheek or the tough bristle*
of the hog or the quills of the por-
cupine. The hair Is the last part
of the body to decay, It Is be-
lieved to grow even after death,
and Is known to Inst a century. In
a Chicago bank window display of
Indian relies, there Is exhibited a
woman's scalp taken by some In-
dian brave more than 100 years
ago. The hair allows no effects of
age It is not dissimilar in color
and In texture to the shorn tresses
of any modern girl's. Even when
exposeil to the elements, hair will
not deteriorate, and can be din-
solved only by heat under pressure
or In the presence of nlkalles or
acids.
Long Enough
After an hour or more, Pat, the
new clerk In the animal store, was
becoming exceedingly Irritated at
the fastidiousness of his customer.
Dog after dog had been brought
from Its kennel and exhibited to
the man, Its points discussed, and
the price fixed, but something was
wrong with each of them.
Finally Pat brought a dachshund.
The customer turned away In
disgust.
"His legs are too short," he said
bitterly.
"Too short, are the.v?" tried Pat,
now thoroughly roused. "Shure,
they reach the ground, don't they?"
Birds That Cannot Walk
All members of the swallow fam-
ily are distinguished by their small,
weak feet which are used only for
clinging and perching purposes.
They cannot walk or hop on tho
ground. These birds spend more
of their time on the wlrig than otli
er birds and they feed chiefly on In
sects they oatch whije In flight.
Even water Is scooped from ponds
by the birds on the wing. Barn
swallows and purple martens are
the most common species of this
family In America.
Aaalyxing Law
Tho true view, as I submit. Is
that the law Is what the Judges de-
clare; that statutes, precedents,
tho opinions of learned experts
customs and morality are the
sourcos of the law; that back of
everything lie the opinions of the
ruling spirits of the community,
who have tho power to close any
of these sources; but that as long
as they do not Interfere, the Judges
to establishing law, have recourse

A Scotchman, not feeling sc

him over and gave him some
