b. Music Education
(1) Must demonstrate by examination skill in conducting.
(2) Must demonstrate by examination proficiency in piano and voice
(vocal emphasis).
(3) Must demonstrate by examination proficiency in piano and one
instrument from each section of the orchestra (instrumental emphasis).(4) Must evidence an understanding of contemporary philosophies of
music education.
c. Theory and Composition.
(1) Must demonstrate by examination ability to read at the piano simple
orchestral scores of the difficulty of a Haydn string quartet or a
Bach chorale.
(2) Must demonstrate proficiency in at least one foreign language.
(3) Must submit several recent scores (original) for approval by members
of the composition faculty and/or others appointed to the
board by the head of the theory-composition department. This
requirement is for the student who is concentrating in the composition
area.
d. All graduate music degrees.
(1) The examining committee of the School of Music may require the
auditing of undergraduate courses for the removal of deficiencies
before a student may register for graduate credit in certain fields
of study.
(2) Prerequisites for all graduate courses must include required
courses on the undergraduate level in each particular area.
(3) All Master of Music degree candidates must successfully pass both
a written and an oral comprehensive examination. The details for
each will be approved by the student's committee.
(4) Applied Music is required on all graduate degrees in music. The
courses with 5000 numbers are used in the Music Education and
Theory-Composition degrees to satisfy the requirements in applied
music as listed under those degrees. The 6000 level numbers are
used only to satisfy requirements in the Applied Literature degree.56
