Grade-Sold Eggs
Increase Income
More than $2,950,000 addition-
al income was received by Tex-
as egg producers in 1957 be-
cause they sold on the basis of
grade, states F. Z. Beanblossom,
extension poultry marketing
specialist in his annual report.
More than 59 million dozens
of eggs were sold in this man-
ner, an increase of about nine
million dozen over last year.
These eggs brought producers
an additional profit of about
five cents per dozen.
The newly formed Marine
Corps saw its first combat oil
March'4, 1776, when 300 Marines
stormed ashore and captured the
British port of New Providence,
Bahamas, seizing large stores of
powder, later taken back to the
colonies for the continental army.

(looking For Weight Watchers
Any weight watchers' in your
family? If so, you, the cook, can
be a big help by planning and
preparing foods to cut calories.
Here are some suggestions:
1. Use non-fat, dry milk solids
for cooking. Reconstituted dry
milk solids heated and combined
with vegetable liquors are good
in soups.
2. Keep desserts simple. Serve
fresh fruits or canned and froz-
en fruits packed in water or
juice—not syrup.
3. Roast or oven or pan-broil
meats, poultry and fish instead
of frying in fat. Avoid "bread-
ing" and use of egg batters on
foods. Trim extra fat from the
meat.
4. Serve salad materials plain
—or use low-calorie seasonings
or salad dressings. These can be
made with tomato juice, herbs
and lemon juice or vinegar.
5. Prepare food without added
fat, sugar or flour whenever pos-
sible.
6. Tempt appetites with herbs
and spices instead of rich season-
ings, sauces and gravies.
7. Serve low-calorie items for
nibblings or appetizers. Try
celery, cabbage wedges, carrot
sticks, or other low-calorie vege-
tables or fruits.
8. Avoid high fat foods such
as cream, butter, gravies, sauc-
es, nuts, potato chips, oil, pastri-
es, rich salad dressing; sweet
foods, such as cakes and cookies;
rich puddings, candies, fountain
drinks and sundaes, carbonated
drinks and alcoholic beverages;
and starchy foods, such as mac-
aroni, dry peas and beans.

Roses For Texas
Anyone can grow roses. The
most common error made by
many gardeners is to try to grow
too many varieties or too many
plants.
Essentials for success with
roses are: Proper planting, a
sunny location, well-drained soli
and plenty of water during the
growing season. Start with No.
1 grade plants of a recommend-
ed variety. Have the ground
ready when plants arrive and
make sure roots are never ex-
posed to sunlight and drying
winds.
Water plants thoroughly. Don't
apply fertilizers to newly-plant-
ed bushes until the ,root system
is well established, then feed at
least twice a season. Never fer-
tilize late in the fall. Keep plants
free of Insects and diseases with
a regular spraying or dusting
schedule.
For details on selection, soil
preparation, pruning and care of
roses, get a copy of TAP-1, "Ros-
es for Texas," from your coun-
ty extension agent's office.

HIGHLY WATER SOLUBLE
Experiments prova that crops
•take up more phosphate from
water soluble AMMO-PHOS
fertilizers than from ordinary

Let Us Demonstrate
This Easy Test
AMMO-PHOS fertilizers are highly water
soluble and we can prove it by limply placing a
small amount of AMMO-PHOS in water and
placing the same amount
of an ordinary fertiliier in »
another equal amount of
water. You'll be able to see
how water soluble AMMO-
PHOS GOES INTO SO-
LUTION while the ordi-
nary fertilizer collects at the
bottom of the glass. You'll
know then why AMMO-
PHOS fertilizers give the
quickest response to crops.
