Center Plains In Old
Time Thanksgiving
One of the most unique and
appropriate observances of Thanksgiving
is the Community getto
gether at Center Plains each year
These people and their friends
forego all other plans and meet
at the school house for an all
day meeting on Thanksgiving day
Each family brings a big dinner
with all the fixings which make
the turkey easier to handle
they spread this on one big table
at dinner time and eat as one
big family As at the first Thanksgiving
they visit swap stories
review the events of the year gone
by the crops the prospects the
birth the deaths etc The program
consists of music readings
and specials with local talent and
three Thanksgiving messages by
as many Invited preachers This
year one of the Tulia Ministers
will bring the message at 1100

JUST LET ME BE GLAD
By Mrs W A Porter
Not for great things O Lord tonight
Not even for a visions sight
But just be thankful to be still
And learn of Thee to do Thy will
For little things I find arc mine
About my door a blooming vine
For little feet that once wore there
Where they were taught an evening prayer
For grown up lives proved strong and true
By many thoughtful deeds they do
For simple food and grace be said
For evening light and comfy bed
For books to read and friends of worth v
For firelight glow and friendly hearth
Just gladsome thoughts for little things
And all the joy each glad thought brings
And consciousness that all is right
For these let me be glad tonight
Weve Something To
Be Thankful For
Three hundred and seventeen
years ago a small group of colonists
gathered for a feast and
thanksgiving lo the Lord for his
care during the first year of their
life ina strange country
The country was what became
the United States of America
the colonists were the remnants
of the passengers on the Mayflower
which sailed from Delshaven
Holland to the coast of AmericaThe land was not kind to the
colonists They were not trained
farmers The climate was cold and
forbidding during the winter hot
dinner will and dry during the summer Sav
be served then another menage J nH < s filled the forests which ran
they will visti awhile and then down the coast
the closing message After this But they had survived for a
they will eat what is left of theyear had harvested crops and
dressing the pumpkin pie the
homemade bread and the cranber
ry sauce
built homes So the Pilgrim fathers
gave Thanksgiving
This month in Swisher County
Those people have been doingscores of families far from the
this for several years the amount scenes of that first Thanksgiving
of the harvest has nothing to do are looking back on a year un
with their meeting to enjoy eachjder thesame American sky kind
others fellowship to share exper
iences and to give thanks to
Almighty God for all things from
His hand This community de
and benefictent to those who tried
for survival
As in Plymouth neighborlincss
and cooperation had brought about
serves the commendation of the fair crops bettered living condi
County for this fine party andtions and hope for the future
the spirit of thanks manifested in These families had applied to the
Farm Security Administration for
neighborly aid and had been given
a program of hope Loans had
knew farm problems and been
made available for suggestions
and demonstrations
To many families the FSA has
offered complete rehabilitation
with a wellrounded program for
recovery To others only the loan
of a small amount necessary to
buy some equipment which would
odd greatly to the family income
has been required In some places
loans have been made to a group
for some large piece of machinery
such as an ensilage cutter which
gives profit to a whole communityIn Swisher County this collection
of these loans many of which
have been in force for only a
year has been high Supervisors
report that 80 per cent of the
borrowers are making satisfactory
repayments A great many have
been repaid in full and in most
cases where repayment is slow
there has been such ill luck as
crop failure or illness in the familyWeve something to be thankful
for too says Barnle E Rush
nig county rehabilitation supervisor
Not only for the high percentage
of loan collections proving
again the fundamental honesty
of the American farmer but
also for the courage and resource
